2023.06.02 18:01 Kcorbyerd Planning upgrades this summer
How do you do, fellow kids? I am getting some upgrades this summer for my PC, and would like to hear some words about it from all y’all. I currently am running a Ryzen 5 5600X, an MSI MAG Tomahawk B550, a GTX 1070, 64GB 3600MHz DDR4 RAM, a Corsair PSU at 650W, a 2TB Samsung Evo 980 SSD, another 1TB Samsung Evo 970 SSD and a 2TB disk drive at 7200rpm for nonessential storage. I also have a Corsair Carbide Mid-Tower case with stock fans and a stock CPU cooler.
My planned upgrades are for a new case, new GPU, new PSU, new fans, new CPU cooler. The case fans and cpu cooler are purchased already, a Lian Li 011 Dynamic EVO mid tower, the DeepCool AK500, and 7 bequiet! Lightwings 120mm. The GPU is tentatively an MSI Nvidia RTX 4080 Ventus 3X triple fan with 16GB GDDR6X, the PSU is tentatively a Corsair RMx SHIFT Series RM1000x 1000 watt 80 Plus Gold ATX power supply.
My intention for this upgrade is for it to last me at least 5 years, and when I do upgrade I won’t want to buy a new PSU. I play several FPS games, I enjoy Minecraft with shaders on, a tough ask of my 1070 right now, and I also do light computational chemistry work on my desktop if need be. Are there any notes or suggestions for me?

2023.06.02 17:31 mattydou7 Standing desk, with top, in Canada, able to withstand about 150lbs of unevenly distributed gear.
Hello everyone!
I have been running in circles in this rabbit hole of trying to find a standing desk for my specific needs.
Of course I would love something affordable. But I also want something durable, and reliable.
I put my desktop on my desk. A Lian Li 011 XL. It weighs nearly sixty pounds. This would be either on the left or right side of ny desk, on the edge.
I have my two monitors plus mount, lets give it a nice 40lbs.
Then I have my audio/video stuff. Mixers, dslr camera on a tripod etc. Rounded up to another good 50lbs just for good measure. Plus of course if I put any weight on my arms while the desk is in standing position.
I need a minimum desk size of 64x25 but would prefer 70x30.
Ive looked at everything from progressivedesk, rockymountain, flexispot, ergonofits, hell even the new secretlabs magnus xl.
Id like to be around 1200~ give or take, all in with taxes and shipping..
If anyone else has plunged into this rabbit hole and come our victorious, I would love any sort of feedback/recommendations etc.
Halp.

2023.06.02 17:28 atekk920 RTX3080 Performance issues - Low GPU usage, FPS drop when mouse input is active.
I have 2 systems in my home both built off of the X99 platform. Old, but still very capable. Let's focus on System B, but I'm going to include details for System A because it has the same ailments.
System A A - i7 5960x (8core\16thread) OC
u/4.5Ghz\1.300v - Lian-Li 240 AIO cooled A - RTX2070super +125Mhz on the core, +100Mhz on the RAM temp capped at 91c via Afterburner B - PCIe 3.0 @ x16 A - 16GB Kingston FURY Beast DDR4
u/2666Mhz 1.3v A - Apevia Prestige 80plus Gold 800watt A - Razer BlackWidow v3 Pro + Viper Ultimate 2x Dell S2417DG GSYNC
u/165Hz\1440p
System B B - i7 6950x (10core\20thread) OC
u/4.3Ghz\1.330v - Deepcool 360 AIO cooled B - RTX3080 +150Mhz on the core, +150Mhz on the RAM temp cap at 91c via Afterburner B - PCIe 3.0 @ x16 B - 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4
u/3600Mhz 1.3v B - Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 80plus Gold 1050watt B - Logitech G915TKL + G502X Plus 2x Dell S2417DG GSYNC
u/165Hz\1440p on each system
Both of these systems will run the GPU + CPU simultaneously at 100% when using a tool like Kombustor, AIDA64, or HWBOT x256 and never make it near throttling temps ....no significant or unusual spikes to speak of in terms of temps, framerates, power draw for both CPU and GPU...all graphs look smooth, steady, and as expected for the entirety of testing, and well within acceptable tolerances. As far as I can see here - there is no indication of a problem.
- The issue - BOTH systems display this behavior in an identical fashion but let's focus on system B since it's got more horsepower - During gameplay GPU usage is spiking heavily downward and VERY rarely reaches close to 100% in games. I have tested the following:
Overwatch 2 Warframe Jedi: Fallen Order Battlefield V Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Metro 2033: Redux Hitman 2016: GOTY Sims 4 Gears of War 4 Apex Legends Bioshock: Remastered Shadow of Tomb Raider Lumote Destiny2
and all of these games behave the same. All settings are "turned to 11" in all games, framerates are uncapped in all games where it can be, and I have modified all the usuals in the NVIDIA control center and Windows to make sure that there aren't any power saving features enabled.
-The exceptions- If I fire up Portal with RTX, or Metro Exodus: PC Enhanced Edition the GPU usage finally is pegged steadily at ~99%, but frames are below 60 and CPU usage is below 65% in both of these instances
-The Icing on the cake - When mouse input is detected, the situation becomes even worse. Framerates and GPU usage PLUMMET - I have seen Overwatch 2 fluctuate from 200+FPS down to below 60 when mouse input is active, then back up to 200+ when I stop moving the mouse - BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!... If I use my Xbox Elite controller to play any of these games via USB or Wireless dongle the
input issue goes away, but the GPU usage still stays well below average.
Constructive thoughts, comments, and concerns welcome..... Thanks for reading!

2023.06.02 16:57 More-Sense-9787 Cooling Ideas
Ok everyone so I have a system that I am looking at building (see below for specs). I am trying to build a compact gaming pc, I have limited space. The case I am using I can only have a 120mm AIO on top or bottom, or a 140mm fan on top and a 120mm on the bottom. My question is. Given that I am using a Lian-Li Q58, what would be a good enough cooling option for the CPU?
Specs: I7-13700k B760i MSI Edge WiFi Corsair Vengeance 64gb (2x32) 6000 mhz MSI M461 2280 4tb MSI M461 2280 1tb MSI Ventus GeForce RTX 4070 12gb Cooler Master V850 PSU Lian-Li Q58
Usage:
This will be mainly used to play StarCitizen. No overclocking will be needed except to ensure the RAM is running at its max speed, I will also be streaming and recording gameplay and i do use a 1440p monitor and a 1080p monitor. Also, I do play other games but Star Citizen is probably the most demanding even if it is not optimized

2023.06.02 16:56 RohitAkki Two-minutes Daily AI Update (Date: 6/2/2023): News from NVIDIA, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Alibaba
Continuing with the exercise of sharing an easily digestible and smaller version of the main updates of the day in the world of AI.
- NVIDIA Research has introduced a new AI model for 3D reconstruction called Neuralangelo. It uses neural networks to turn 2D video clips from any device– cell phone to drone capture– into detailed 3D structures, generating lifelike virtual replicas of buildings, sculptures, and other real-world objects. The high fidelity makes its 3D reconstructions easier for developers and creative professionals to create usable virtual objects for their projects rapidly.
- OpenAI is launching the Cybersecurity Grant Program—a $1M initiative to boost and quantify AI-powered cybersecurity capabilities and to foster high-level AI and cybersecurity discourse. The goal is to work with defenders across the globe to change the power dynamics of cybersecurity through AI and the coordination of like-minded individuals working for collective safety.
- Google's retrieval-augmented model addresses the challenge of pre-training; it aims to reduce the computational requirements of large-scale AI models like T5, GPT-3, PaLM, Flamingo, and PaLI. The model uses a multi-source multi-modal "memory" to answer knowledge-intensive queries & allows the model parameters to focus on reasoning about the query rather than being dedicated to memorization.
- Microsoft is enhancing the free version of Teams on Windows 11 by introducing new features. The built-in Teams app will now include support for communities, allowing users to organize and interact with family, friends, or small community groups. This feature, similar to Facebook and Discord, was previously limited to mobile devices but is now available for Windows 11. It's also getting support for Microsoft Designer, an AI art tool for generating images based on text prompts, which will also be integrated into Microsoft Teams on Windows 11.
- Alibaba joins the crowd of tech companies looking to compete with the mega-popular ChatGPT. They officially launched its new AI chatbot just like ChatGPT, integrating the technology into its suite of apps, including its flagship messaging app DingTalk. They plan to continually introduce more features for the chatbot throughout the year, including real-time English-to-Chinese translation of multimedia content and a Google Chrome extension.
More detailed breakdown of these news and innovations in the daily newsletter (Link in the profile).

2023.06.02 16:35 masterkeaton1000 First time vertical GPU mount. Pretty pleased with the results.
Hey everyone, firstly apologies if this is the wrong place for this but:
Recently rebuilt my rig in a new case (Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh C) and decided to buy the vertical GPU mounting kit they provide for it too.
This is my first time doing a vertical mount but I reckon I did pretty good with it, what are your thoughts?
PS: I know the GPU is sagging a bit, I used a level and managed to get it with only 1 degree of sag using my GPU stand so I'm happy with that.

2023.06.02 16:25 Comfortable-Salary94 Front mounted AIO clearance question with Lian-Li o11 Air Mini and RX 6800 XT 319 Merc
Planning my first build since gen1 Ryzen. Feels right to round it out on the back end of the AM4 platform with an R7 5800X3d especially with the current value.
One of the things I hated about my first build was that the case was way too big for the hardware I had inside and it looked ugly.. so im trying to cram as many full sized components into this case as possible to fill every inch…
I will be using a full ATX board which gives me some concerns for top mounted AIO clearance in this case.
So as it stands, the plan is to mount a 280mm Kraken Z63 on the front, however the 6800 Rx merc is a very large card… 340mm length.
The Kraken AIO is shown as having a width of 30mm (unsure if this is including the fans or not)
According to Lian-Li website this card falls under the max gpu length supported (362mm) in the case
Essentially I’m asking if anyone has used this combo, or knows if it’s possible. Thanks in advance 🙏

unknown 6 heatpipe thermalright cooler - possibly the burst assassin non-argb model without fan | 2nd hand from the 12400 guy. tower only. has blemish/nick on contact surface. his laundry detergent had fragrance, so i couldn't use it. he also didn't clean the paste off and shipped it in a ziplock bag. i cleaned it as well as i could and replaced the bag. | 15?/10 |
noctua s12b redux 1200rpm | 2nd hand from the 12400 guy. same scent problem. can't remember testing it. | 10?/5 |
arctic alpine 17 co | BNIB, but box looks beat up | 13/8 |
id cooling se-224-xt-basic | used to cool a 3800X for a few months before the faulty mobo went kaput and sold the other parts of it. no 1700 mounting hardware because it was produced before alder lake. the win10pro key from the msi pro mobo is written on a slip of paper tucked inside the instruction manual. | 25?/15 |
Thermalright Assassin X 120 refined SE | mounted 90 degrees clockwise for bottom-to-top airflow in sama case | 20/15 |
| | |
| Motherboards | |
| | |
msi b660m mortar wifi ddr4 | mobo vrms have coil whine crackle-hum using turbo boost, most likely related to powerstate/frequency switching (disappears when fully loaded or not doing anything) or concurrent with putting load on the integrated graphics, tried a whole bunch of bios settings to stop it, C1E enabled reduces it. integrated graphics culprit unverified due to case and difficulty with it; haven't tested a discrete card to eliminate igpu cause. latest bios(v19) at the time is flashed, need earlier bios version for avx512 capability, tried to get that instruction set working but found out it involves tainting my kernel and i don't use windows but if you do, the only os-side step is to move the specific intel microcode file out of system32. replaced the ilm with the thermalright one. includes right angle usb3 header adapter. | 100/100 |
msi b660m a pro ddr4 wifi | 2nd hand from 12400 guy. has smudge on backside near cpu bracket from alcohol solubility test on the paint; backside is alcohol soluble. has same scent as others from him. he did a bad paste job on cpu area and shipped it that way, i cleaned it up (no socket pins got paste on them thankfully because he didn't remove cpu from the board) tested and it works. comes with windows 10 pro key. the m.2 wifi card was worked, but putting it back in this board... i didn't have enough finger dexterity. one of the contact n!pp!es is bent, needs to be bent back. can't get it back out to do that, stuck. includes piece of factory glue that goes between the contacts and holds the leads in place. treat as non wifi version with potential bonus for trying hard enough. anti static bag on one side MAY have trace of urushiol due to being blown away when airing out onto a patch of cracked concrete where two weeks previously had been a sprout which had been disposed of then the area alcohol-doused then two rainstorms. includes right angle usb3 header adapter. | 80/70 |
thermalright 1700 anti-bending ilm silver | comes with thermal paste(used once) and original ilm of the mortar mobo | 9/8 |

teamgroup 2x8gb 3200 c16 | 2nd hand from 12400 guy, works, had somehow strongest scent of them all. | 32//25 |
timetec 2x16gb 3200 c16 | dual rank with hynix 8gigabit jjr ic's (lower binned cjr) remember to lock in the voltage to safe level for that ic instead of auto. partially manually overclocked, enabled xmp then increase to gear1 3466mt/s (what i can tell, max speed with the locked vcssa without loosening timings) and the few timings changed are: command rate to real 1N; did not test tighter than tRRD to 6, tRRD_L to 6, and tFAW to 24; tREFI should be able to be higher than 24960 but didn't test; tRFC has errors at 460, can't remember what 480's result was, and 500 is stable. stressapptest for an hour after each change made, no errors. may go tighter, less than 10 attempts worth of tweaking. | 70/65 |

western digital sn770 500gb | 2nd hand from the 12400 guy, but didn't notice scent(was under heatsink). has been secure erased. smart data said 2.4tbw. | 30/25 |
samsung 970 evo plus 2tb | 2nd hand from best buy geek squad refurbished. smart data indicated literal open box condition. has been secure erased. smart data says 3.28tbw. | 98/80 |

xfx rx460 4gb | 2nd hand from a miner in 2021. was dirty but cleaned it, had mining bios, and the standard bios or other custom bios don't seem stable, but it works with a rx560 bios i modded to rx550 clocks. thought i saw something spherically, iridescently marbled green-yellowgreen falling from it when putting it back together after cleaning but couldn't find the drop or where it may have dropped from, capacitors look ok. single fan version. has annoying blue led. requires 6-pin pcie power even though it draws less than 75w. | 45/35 |
| | |
| Cases | |
| | |
sama im01 | hohboy, man oh man, this case.... removing the front panel carefully according to the manual causes the top clips to break(so that's why it includes two spares), and is difficult to work in even though all sides but the back come off. can't put a discrete gpu in because it can't go into the slot all the way; something about the mobo tray being depressed or pci slot design prevents it. front left usb3.0 defective (blips then doesn't work) but the right one is functional. pci slot magnetic swinging screw cover hinge is a bit bent because the top and bottom packaging foam were switched in factory(foam cutouts did not align). matx mobo prevents bottom from having second fan if not want to risk mobo header bending. | 60/30 |
lian li lancool 216 black non-rgb model | opened the box and took out the inner accessory box on top but put it right back because became busy and never got around to using it. did not take out the case. almost literally open box. do not know state of tempered glass but jiggling box does not make broken glass sound. | 100/90 |
arctic p12 pwm pst 5 pack | 2 used in the sama im01, 3 unused | 30/25 |

corsair sf600 platinum | 3 months use. powered the 12400 using integrated graphics, don't think total system power exceeded 150w from the wall. | 110/110 |
thermaltake tr2 430np | don't know if it was 2nd hand or not. used to power a windows xp office machine which was bought without one. Don't use more than 350 watts; here is a review of the unit showing why- https://www.hardwaresecrets.com/thermaltake-purepower-430w-np-power-supply-review/ its F-tier but would personally trust it in a system pulling less than 100 or so from the wall. one cable with 20+4-pin motherboard connectors one cable with 6-pin pcie connector one cable with 4-pin 12v connector one cable with 3 molex connectors two cables with 3 molex and 1 floppy connector one cable with 2 sata connectors one molex-to-sata converter | 20/5 |
cablemod black modflex EPS 4+4 pin 45cm extension | sf600 needs the extension to reach the mobo receptacle in the sama case | 9/9 |

hp zr24w + ergodepot J2 monitor arm | 60hz, 1920x1200, 24inch. 12 years use. ccfl backlight has been on for ~3.3 years. came with a scratch not noticeable when on most of the time. has smudges from over a decade of use, not trusting myself to clean it without scratching. includes J2 monitor arm (desk clamp), but makes it skew a little. when powered on, it knocks channel 6 out of the airwaves until it is turned off. flickers below 100% brightness. | 50+40?(90?)/50+20(70) |
tecknet um013 mouse | awful scroll wheel. defaults to the lower of the two dpi settings every time it loses power; does not save setting. 2 months use. | 6/3 |
redragon karura k502 rgb keyboard | 2nd hand. works, but did not verify all keys. | 20/8 |
presonus eris E3.5 studio monitors | were on my desk for 10 days and powered on at low volume for under an hour, may be low amount of specks of dust, and the speaker wire had been connected, but otherwise is as if you opened up a new one. didn't like the space they took up and preferred my headphones, but B&H would not take these back because i told them i used the included speaker wire. no joke. | 90/80 |
samson go mic | 2nd hand. works, good shape. usb condenser with omni/-10/cardioid switch and 3.5mm jack. has sticker covering the led to diminish the brightness. | 25/15 |
xbox 360 wired controller | didn't use it often, but owned it for a really long time. the left thumbstick has worn down, is low tension, and can drift slightly if off center to the northwest. | 10/4 |
asus xonar dx | 2nd hand. used for a few months in 2011 but was too close to gpu intake so put it away. | 30/18 |
logitech c600 webcam | model V-U0007 | 12/5 |

Summary | first number taken from recent reasonable hardwareswap/ebay sales and amazon(when first two no/little results) and second number what i'd pay for the item in question if I was someone else, based on what is known of the condition. Paid 1300+ for just the parts bought in the last year, so imo this is a super deal if you are in the area. | Total: 1299/1073 |

2023.06.02 13:20 KenG1_SZZ Is deshroud mod really viable? What is the success rate? Should I do it to my GPU?
I am recently having issues with my GPU (Palit gaming Pro 3080 Ti) running hot and noisy. Even I have liquid metal and graphite pads applied. I even bought new case and have a top to bottom airflow for card in Lian Li O11 Air mini. With 4x140mm fans for intake and 2x120mm and 140mm fan for exhaust. And still undervolted it hits 75 degrees which is by my standarts a bit too much considering its undervolted. I pretty much done everything to prevent my card from overheating (even removed PCI card in the way of gpu which didnt help at all). Except for deshroud. Should I do deshroud mod? I have planned to buy 2xAcrtic P12 slims and 92x15mm pressure optimized id cooling fan for exhaust on that meshy side of the backplate because there might be not enough room for 25mm fans when I have PCI expansion card slotted in
I ve seen posts and videos but some of them are not really stands up to the standarts of testing. I am very worried.
Is there a possibility that this fans might not have enough pressure to put air through the heatsink and I end up just wasting my money for fans and 4 pin mini adapter? If decide to go with deshroud I will add edit with my results here.

2023.06.02 11:45 Leather-Bathroom9229 Lian Li SL Infonity or Thermaltake Swafan Ex
I want to change my fans to Lian Li Uni Fan Infinity or Thermaltake Swafan EX120. I bought Corsair LL 120 and installed it partly with the back facing inwards for the optimal airflow.
What I didn't think of when I bought was the ugly back with this incredibly ugly sticker.
Has anyone here had any experience with one of the two fans? Or even with both and can call pros and cons?
