2023.06.02 18:14 phantasmal-dream 41 [M4F] Do you enjoy scary movies, coffees, and want a relationship?

Hello and Happy Friday!
Looking for a long term connection that's childfree and monogamous. I am single, don't have kids and don't want them. Pets are okay!
I really like scary movies, humour, good conversations, coffees, pizza, ice cream, and simple living.
Non drinker, no drugs, very seldom cannabis consumption, I used to smoke cigarettes but quit, I'm not superficial and don't have any particular musts when it comes to appearance. I am very casual myself - jeans / shirt / shoes etc. I prefer comfort over fancy.
My ideal first date would be us meeting for a coffee and conversation. I want to share my love of horror, whether at hom or at the cinema. I would like to go out and share pizza or other delicious foods at small eateries or restaurants. Window browsing going for walks or just enjoy randomness around the general area of Toronto. I am located in Etobicoke south for reference.
Specs: 5'10, very short brown hair, glasses, white, no facial hair, and 169 lbs. with a bit extra around the middle. I don't have a lot but I'm very grateful for everything I do have. I don't expect us to agree on everything or share the same views, couples can agree and disagree. I know I'm not perfect and don't expect you to be!
Not looking for an immediate meet, but don't expect endless messages back and forth. Let's talk and establish a level of comfort so we can plan our first meeting. If we don't click, no pressure, we can part ways as friends.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, if you're interested in chatting don't hesitate to reach out!
Take care!

2023.06.02 18:14 Xapisity Any ideas if there are plans to bring back the hands-free lift gate? And/or acoustic laminate glass?

Hey all
Slowly trying to get caught up on all the Mach E headlines since i last paid attention around the original launch date.
Biggest "changes" i saw, and things a future purchaser should be aware of are the following:
Am i missing anything else i should be aware of? Especially since it sounds like dealers are still not going to be as well educated as the folks here on reddit or macheforum etc.
Any ideas if the lift gate or acoustic glass is returning after the supply chain issues resolve themselves over time?
I have a CRV with the hands free lift gate and it doesn't always work, so i know its not a super important feature but it is really nice to have when it does work lol..

2023.06.02 18:13 HitEmUpB [Los Angeles, CA] Parking included in my lease has been unusable since I moved in.

I just moved into a new apartment 2 months ago. The first few days I noticed a substance leaking onto my car in my apartment's underground parking garage.
I notified the landlord and he said it would get fixed immediately, one week passed and nothing. Instead I found a tarp on top of my car. I messaged the landlord again if he had a timeline and that my car had stains from the leak. He said it should take a week or 2 and that he would pay for a detailed car wash and asked me not to park there until it's fixed. When I asked him for a timeline on when it will get fixed, he said he has to talk to his contractors. It's been over 2 weeks and I have not heard back.
The lease has the following under the Parking clause:
"The right to parking is in the Rent charged pursuant to paragraph 3." (Paragraph 3 is the Rent clause)
There is one guest parking spot available, but when I asked the Manager of the building for it, he said it won't be possible since that is for guest use only lol.
The worst part of parking on the street is that parking is limited and there are street cleanings. So I've been having to deal with waking up early to move my car, and I'm practically strapped when it comes to going out in the evenings because I don't want to lose my parking space and have to deal with finding no parking at night. Also there is a high chance my car will get broken into since it's a Kia and I've seen cars parked on the street that have had their windows smashed.
I texted him yesterday explaining how difficult it's been parking in the street, I asked if I could please use the guest parking and if I can get my rent reduced for the days I didn't use the parking space. Its been a few days and he hasn't replied.
I know my next step is to send a notarized letter but what exactly should I be putting in it and what kind of legal action can I take?

2023.06.02 18:13 CheshireCookieCat Cost to repair or replace?

I am hoping that someone here can offer advice as to how much it may cost to repair or replace a stained-glass window of mine that was destroyed during a break-in.
I'm not ready to hire an artist yet but have been asked by the attorney to provide an estimate of damages.
It was created in the 1970's by a family friend in Massachusetts. There were six colors of glass used. It is approximately 2' x 3'
I have attempted to attach a photo, I hope it shows up. Thank you to anyone who may be able to help.

2023.06.02 17:51 TSLA1000 UV blocking ability of factory privacy glass on 4runner

Lots of conflicting information on the internet on this one.
Does anyone know if factory privacy glass has any UV blocking abilities? I’m talking about the rear side windows and rear window.
Wondering if anyone has metered the glass to see.
Thanks

2023.06.02 17:45 sbizzler Studio filled with some kind of gnat, how can I tell what they are and how can I get rid of them?

I was away from my studio apartment for two weeks and left some dirty dishes out in the kitchen. I also honestly let the surfaces on the side get quite dirty too with a few small crumbs of food and otherwise some stains on parts. When I came back a few gnats were flying around. I got rid of the one (dead) plant pot I had and they still come back. They appear in the day and there can be up to 8 flying around at once but at night time there usually are only one or two if any at all, I’m not sure if this is just because I kill the few that I can, because they fly out of the window in the evening and back in the following day, or if they aren’t active at night time. What kind of gnats do these sound like and how should I get rid of them?

19°28’N 37°14’E
Near Port Sudan, Sudan, Africa.
Another helicopter thundered past in the distance, following the line of the oil pipeline back towards the port facilities.
"That's three in the past hour," Cody observed. "Still think nothing's going on?" "I think if you want to bother Adams again it's gonna be your ass." Keith replied.
"Come on, don't be like that." Cody said.
"Nope."
"Come on, don't be a bitch."
"Nope."
"Bitch says what."
"Nope."
"Got fifty bucks says you won't do it."
"Nope."
"Will both of you shut the fuck up," Eduardo groaned from the back seat of the vehicle. "We're almost done here and you can go harass Adams in person when we get back to base."
"Yeah but I'm curious now." Cody said.
"Well, tell Miles to turn this vic around and we can go."
"What do you say, Miles? You know Adams doesn't check the log timestamps too closely."
"The final marker is literally thirty meters away," Miles said patiently. "I will turn the vic around there and we will drive back to base and you can badger Adams into a stroke on your own time. Until then, watch your sector."
"Uh well, my sector's full of sand, can I have a different one?"
"There's some rocks in mine."
"Like the face of the fucking moon out here, man." Cody moaned.
"Maybe you shouldn't have signed up for a job in the fucking Sudan, genius." Eduardo said.
"Man, I'm just here for the money." Cody replied.
"Well, I'm not here for the weather." Martin said, cranking the wheel around in a practiced motion. The battered white SUV slewed around, wheels spraying dust and pebbles. Cody keyed the radio on his vest. "Base, this is Cody checking in. We're at the outer marker for the southern patrol path, heading back, over."
There was the faint buzz of static.
"Copy that, Cody. Any contacts?"
"No contacts, base. All quiet here. Out."
Martin patted Cody on the shoulder. "Proud of you, buddy. That took real strength."
Cody flipped him off.
The radio crackled again. "Cody, this is base, where did you say you were?"
"Base, this is Cody, we are at the outer marker for our patrol route, heading back your way, over."
"Uh, copy Cody, hang on one second."
“Cody, this is Adams,” a new voice said over the radio. “I need your team to swing west and investigate unauthorized activity near the pipeline in, uh grid square A54-41."
"The fuck this is Cody's team." Keith muttered from the back.
"Copy that, Adams, we'll move to investigate immediately," Cody said crisply. "Any intel on the intruders?"
The radio crackled again. "The uh, number of intruders is unknown at this time."
Miles keyed his own radio. "Adams, who called this report in?"
"The report was forwarded to us by local security forces."
A chorus of groans rose from the interior of the SUV.
"Fuckin' locals." Eduardo said.
"And why isn't local security handling this?"
"Miles, I don't need to remind you that Vericom has been contracted to guard the terminal facilities and pipeline-"
"Yeah yeah, spare me the geopolitics, Adams, I'm just a dumb trigger puller, remember? I'm not asking you why I'm here, I'm asking why the very much armed local security isn't apprehending the trespassers."
"The local security called it in," Adams replied in a tight, angry voice. "And under the terms of our contract we are responsible for apprehending any trespassers in our zone. Is that satisfactory, Mr. Martin?"
"Copy, moving to apprehend. Out."
"Fuckin' locals." Eduardo muttered again as the SUV turned towards the new destination.
"Coming up on the location now." Cody was tapping at the topographical map displayed on his ruggedized tablet.
"Copy that," Miles said absently, maneuvering the SUV around a scattering of larger boulders. Behind him Keith rolled down his window and propped the muzzle of his M4 carbine on the opening.
"Relax," Eduardo said. "Just some lost people."
"Maybe." Keith said, squinting out over the dusty, rolling terrain.
The SUV bounced over the crest of another low ridge, the long dust plume trailing behind it in the harsh midday sun. Miles slowed to a stop. In the far distance there was a glint of light off a moving vehicle traversing the coastal highway. There was no other sign of life in sight.
"Yeah, there's nothing out here." Cody said after a few moments.
Keith had extracted a pair of binoculars from his chest rig and was scanning the surroundings.
"Nothing on this side, boss." Eduardo said.
"Keith?" Miles said.
"Nothing moving but heat haze."
"Cody, call in negative contact. Let's head back to base." Miles said as the SUV rolled forward.
"Copy copy." Cody keyed his radio. "Base, this is Cody, we're at grid A54-41, negative on contact with intruders, over."
"Copy that Cody, we haven't gotten any other reports in your zone, go ahead and head in."
"Thanks very much, base, will do. Cody out."
The SUV bumped and bounced its way back onto the “paved” road. While the main coastal highway was in decent shape, the smaller roads were mostly potholes and washouts held together by cracked concrete and gravel. Although flatter than the surrounding landscape, it was a bold or desperate driver that would risk driving on it at normal highway speeds. This fact most likely saved four lives as Miles had plenty of time to spot the dusty tan plate lying in the road as the vehicle slowly bounced towards it.
“Guys, is that a land mine I’m seeing in the road ahead?” Miles said, pointing. “Directly ahead, maybe twenty yards, just past the two bushes.”
Cody sat up, peering through the dusty windshield. “Slow up, slow up. Shit, I think you’re right.”
“Call it in,” Miles said. “We use this road all the time, what was the last team through here?"
"Dallas' team had outer perimeter patrol this morning." Keith volunteered.
"Base, this is Cody, we've got what looks like a landmine on Route 33, maybe two or three klicks from the coastal highway, please advise, over."
There was a brief hiss of static. No reply.
"Base, do you read, over?"
Static.
“Base, this is a fucking great time for a coffee break!”
No answer.
“Guys, I think this is a no shit situation,” Miles said, putting the SUV in reverse. “Let’s get off the X and back to base.”
Cody slid his AR up into the ready position. Keith and Eduardo already had their rifles out and ready.
Miles executed a hasty three point turn and gunned the SUV back the way they had come.
“How concerned should we be right now?” Keith shouted over the engine noise. “Not the
first time we’ve lost comms with base out here.”
“Could be nothing,” Miles shouted back. “But out here it could be a strike on the port or oil terminal. Not that hard to jam comms and drop a few mines on the roads.”
“Hell, I’m here for it.” Keith shouted.
“I’ll keep trying to raise base or one of the other teams.” Cody shouted.
The SUV bounced and lurched its way back over the route it had taken and finally reached the coastal highway where Miles jammed the pedal down. Cody still couldn’t make contact with base but was able to reach another patrolling team who confirmed that base was incommunicado. As they roared up the coastal highway Cody pointed towards a rising plume of dense black smoke ahead of them. “Looks like shit’s gone down, boys.”
“Fuck,” Keith swore, peering around Cody’ headrest to look ahead. “So much for site security.”
“Guys, we’ve got a roadblock ahead.” Cody said, pointing. A dilapidated cargo truck had stopped and was attempting to turn around. A pair of pickup trucks were just visible beyond it, blocking off the road in a shallow V. Men in mismatched fatigues and headscarves stood atop them holding rifles.
“Are those our guys?” Miles asked, slowing the SUV.
“Fuck if I can tell from here.” Cody said.
“Well I’m not fucking moving up.” Miles said.
“Go around,” Eduardo said, peering out his window. “No ditch here.”
“Go now while the truck is between us and them.” Keith added.
“Hang on.” Miles gunned the SUV down the shallow embankment parallel to the roadblock.
Keith twisted around in his seat. “They’re tracking us”.
Miles glanced in the rearview mirror. The guards were pointing and waving their arms at the SUV. One of them with a pistol in one hand and a radio in the other seemed to be giving orders
“Are we still under the ROE?” Cody asked. “I’d really like to shoot back if they try to kill us.”
“I’m not dying over fucked comms and a misunderstanding.” Keith said.
The checkpoint guards were scrambling into their trucks. One of them ripped off a burst that went wide.
“Fuck it, that’s good enough for me,” Miles said, slamming on the brakes. “Dismount and engage hostiles.”
The men threw themselves out of the vehicle. Eduardo and Cody went prone in the dirt and began firing. On the other side Keith propped his rifle on the vehicle’s bumper and squeezed off several careful shots.
The checkpoint guards had been caught by surprise by the sudden attack. One of the trucks had just roared into motion when the bullets began punching through the windshield. The other was still parked, its crew climbing into the cab when the shooting started. Multiple rounds smashed the windshield into a starred, opaque mess. The driver leaped from the seat and ran for cover behind the truck wheels. Miles shot him in the back and he dropped.
The other truck rolled forward down the shallow incline with a dead driver at the wheel. The guards in the back continued firing over the roof. The back window of the SUV shattered and bullets banged off the steel frame, showering Keith and Eduardo with shards of safety glass. Miles fired at a guard crouched in the truck bed and the man disappeared, then popped back up again when Miles shifted targets. Miles shifted back and fired again, his gun clicking empty on the third shot. He dropped the empty magazine and yanked a new one from his vest. The new mag clicked into place and Miles resumed shooting. A corner of his mind was pleasantly surprised at how easily it was done under fire.
One of the guards on the far truck bailed off the back and fled across the road, disappearing into the ditch on the far side. Suddenly no one was firing back at them.
Miles cautiously rose to his feet. With Keith and Cody covering him, he and Eduardo circled wide around the checkpoint, scanning for any sign of life. Nothing moved but wisps of steam from under the hood of one of the trucks. He waved the others in. They swept the checkpoint carefully. There were six dead guards and a blood trail leading out into the brush.
“Fuck.” Keith said emphatically.
“Fuck me,” Cody said, slotting in a fresh mag. “You guys good?
“I’m good.” Keith said.
“Good here.” Eduardo said, patting himself down.
“I’m ok.” Martin said.
“Fuck,” Keith said again. “Fuckers just opened up on us. These weren’t local security, right?”
“Check the bodies for intel,” Miles said, already rifling through the pockets of one of the shooters. “I don’t know who the fuck these guys were but we’re gonna get grilled about this.”
The three of them methodically searched the bodies while Eduardo held overwatch. None of the bodies had any documents on them. The weapons were gathered and stacked in the back of one of the trucks while the bodies were laid out next to it. Martin retrieved their SUV which proved to have suffered no worse damage than shot out windows and the four of them piled in.
Cody finally got a response on the radio as they neared the base. A rattled Adams responded to their calls by ordering them in to assist with base security. “Radio shack got hit and we’ve been dealing with jamming. We still have two patrols out in the field who haven’t reported in, we need you to assist in maintaining a defensive perimeter.”
“Copy that, boss. Tell base we’re coming in so don’t fucking shoot at us. Already dealt with that once today.”
They dismounted in the central courtyard. The comms building had taken a direct hit from an RPG and was still smoking. Two sheet covered bodies lay beside it. Several of the other buildings had bullet holes and other signs of battle damage.
As directed, the team took up defensive positions on the roof of one of the perimeter buildings. Dallas’ team was on a nearby building overlooking the main entrance. Miles got on the radio and contacted them.
“Glad to see y’all made it,” Dallas said by way of greeting. “Been a real shitshow here.” He pointed towards the billowing black smoke belching out of the wreckage of the oil pipeline terminal. “Probably not getting our contract renewed for this site.”
“So what the fuck happened?” Miles asked.
“Don’t know. We were in the bunkhouse when we heard the radio shack get hit. Whoever it was lit the place up and then peeled out. We had barely gotten outside when the oil terminal went up. Someone said they saw Sea Ports Corporation logos on the trucks but I don’t know if that’s true. All I saw was dust.”
“Shit, you think that’s true? Locals were behind this?”
“Someone with more brains than your average fanatic is. They knew exactly what to hit and exactly how to jam our comms.”
“They mined the roads along our patrol routes too, so either they’ve been watching us or they paid off someone on the inside.”
“Smart.” Dallas said.
“I saw the two bodies by the radio shack. Any of your team get hit?”
“Negative. They were in and out. I think someone in the admin building caught a stray round but that was all.”
“I know Shedge was on shift in comms,” Miles said. “Who was the other?”
“Morris.” Dallas said.
They fell silent for a while.
The two missing patrol teams drove in thirty minutes later in a single shot up SUV. They had come under long range fire from hidden enemies and had evaded out into the desert. One of the vehicles had been disabled, but the team managed to dismount and take cover while the other vehicle moved to pick them up. One team member had been grazed on the leg and another had taken a hit to the chest plate. The uninjured team members joined them on the perimeter defense. No attack materialized.
A convoy of Sudanese military vehicles rolled in late that evening to take charge of the terminal. The PMC personnel were ordered to collect their personal items and evacuate the site. The Sudanese wanted them out, so while the company lawyers argued with the Sudanese administration, all personnel on the ground were transported out to Port Sudan International Airport for flights back to the United States.
Miles, Keith, Cody, and Eduardo caught up with each other outside the terminal. Keith was chatting with two of the airport ground crew in passable Arabic as the others walked up.
“Hey, you guys aren’t going to believe this but apparently there’s been a bunch of foreign fighter types coming through here in the past several weeks.” Keith said by way of greeting.
“Go fucking figure.” Miles said.
“I don’t even give a shit,” Cody said, unwrapping a pack of cigarettes. “In a couple of hours I’ll be on my way back home with a fat early contract termination check in my pocket.”
Eduardo nodded. “We all survived, importantly.”
“Amen to that.” Cody said.
The ground crew members bid Keith farewell and sauntered off towards the terminal.
There was silence for a minute while Cody methodically extracted and lit up a cigarette.
“That was pretty fucking badass though,” Miles said. “Shot our way out of an ambush and drove home.”
“Pretty wild.” Keith agreed.
“Never saw the people I killed before,” Eduardo said. “Returning fire yes, but not securing the bodies. Always gone afterwards.”
“I definitely had that out-of-body feeling you get sometimes under fire,” Cody said. “Like you’re just watching your own body go through the motions while you sit and watch.”
“I never got that,” Miles said. “I was inside my own head but I always knew somehow what to do next. Like even when we swept the roadblock I knew exactly where to turn and where the bodies were going to be. It sounds crazy but I wasn’t really scared of getting shot, I was scared of moving wrong or stepping in the wrong place and I’d break the focus and suddenly I’d have to think through every motion again.”
Eduardo nodded. “I know how that feels.”
Another silence. Cody took a deep drag on the cigarette.
“You don’t think we’ll get fired over this, do you?” Keith asked. “Because I still have bills to pay back home and I don’t need this on my record.”
“I doubt it,” Cody said. “I mean, its completely out of our hands so who the fuck knows really. But its not something you get fired over. You see how fast they’re pulling us out of here, like no operation debrief or anything? Company’s got bigger problems to worry about right now.”
“Like the oil pipeline that got blown up, not about a possible bad shoot in the desert.” Keith said.
“Oil terminal.” Miles corrected quietly.
“You watch,” Cody continued. “In about three days some Vericom executive is going to strap on his golden parachute and take a dive off the top floor because the company stock dipped by sixty cents. Then we’ll all get an email with a big fat non-disclosure agreement attached showing up in our inboxes.”
“You would work for them again?” Eduardo sounded surprised.
“Fuck it, why not?” Cody said. “The pay’s good, and what are the odds that a fuck up like this happens to me twice?”
“Seems like higher odds than before.” Miles said.
“Everybody’s running a little hot these days,” Keith said. “You’ve got the Syrian and Yemen civil wars, the military coup in Turkey, the bombings in Europe, the riots in India, the drug wars in Mexico and southeast Asia, plus that bombing at the Olympics.”
“I still think that one was a false flag.” Cody said.
“Bullshit, that was the work of ISIS scum.” Eduardo replied angrily.
“He’s got a point, Cody,” Miles said. “They grabbed one of the bombers before he could clack off his vest after all.”
“Maybe,” Cody said. “Now the shooting at the Clinton rally, that was a false flag, no question. The FBI practically admitted it. They’re terrified she’ll lose and they need a few martyrs.”
“Don’t know why you pay so much attention to that,” Miles said. “Not like the other guy is any better. Just a pair of narcissistic old fucks getting their rocks off on the American people’s dime.”
“I like to know which side is going to be screaming about a rigged election for the next four years while their savings and civil liberties go up in smoke.” Cody lit another cigarette from the butt of the first.
“You know I hate it when you chain smoke and turn into Alex Jones.” Miles said.
“Brother, you should see me on meth.” Cody grinned.
“I didn’t know you smoked at all.” Eduardo said.
“Only on the way home,” Cody said. “Otherwise I don’t.”
The four of them stood around on the airport tarmac until the encroaching evening chill drove them inside with the rest of the Vericom personnel. Miles’ last glimpse of Sudan was the stark black outline of the western hills as the sun sank behind them. Then night fell and the only light was the harsh white arc lights of the airport illuminating the red and white airliner being fueled to carry them home.

Fire damage restoration refers to the process of cleaning, repairing, and restoring a property that has been affected by a fire. Fires can cause significant damage to a building's structure, as well as its contents, due to flames, smoke, and the water used to extinguish the fire. Fire damage restoration professionals are trained to assess the extent of the damage and undertake the necessary steps to restore the property to its pre-fire condition. Here are the general steps involved in fire damage restoration:
Emergency Contact: The first step is to contact a professional fire damage restoration company. They will respond quickly to assess the situation and provide immediate assistance.
Assessment: Upon arrival, the restoration professionals will assess the extent of the fire damage. This includes inspecting the affected areas, identifying the type of fire (such as electrical, grease, or chemical fire), and determining the scope of restoration required.
Securing the Property: If the fire has caused structural damage, the restoration team will secure the property to prevent further damage and ensure safety. They may board up windows, cover damaged roofs, or fence off hazardous areas.
Water Removal and Drying: If water was used to extinguish the fire, the restoration team will start the process of water extraction and drying. They use specialized equipment like pumps, vacuums, and dehumidifiers to remove water and moisture from the affected areas.
Smoke and Soot Cleanup: Smoke and soot can spread throughout the property, leaving behind stains, odors, and potential health hazards. Restoration professionals use specialized techniques and equipment to clean the surfaces, remove soot, and eliminate smoke odors. This may involve dry cleaning, wet cleaning, and the use of air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
Structural Repair: Depending on the extent of the fire damage, structural repairs may be necessary. This can involve repairing or replacing damaged walls, floors, ceilings, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC systems. Restoring the structural integrity of the building is crucial to ensure safety.
Content Cleaning and Restoration: The restoration team will assess the damage to the property's contents, including furniture, appliances, clothing, documents, and personal belongings. Salvageable items will be cleaned, deodorized, and restored. In some cases, items may need to be taken off-site for specialized cleaning and restoration.
Odor Removal: Fire damage can leave lingering odors that are unpleasant and hard to eliminate. Restoration professionals employ various techniques such as ozone treatment, thermal fogging, or air filtration to remove odors and improve indoor air quality.
Reconstruction and Restoration: Once the property is cleaned, dried, and deodorized, the restoration team will begin the reconstruction process. This involves rebuilding damaged areas, repainting, installing new flooring, and restoring the property to its pre-fire condition.
Fire damage restoration is a complex process that requires expertise and specialized equipment. It is important to hire a reputable fire damage restoration company that is experienced in handling fire-related emergencies and can efficiently restore your property.

2023.06.02 17:25 dobromangregorio Strange stains appear on ceiling overnight.

Strange stains appear on ceiling overnight.
A mystery for you to help me solve. At some point in a four day window, marks appeared on my living room ceiling. There are thousands of them and some, though very few, speckle a wall here or there, none more than 18 inches from the ceiling. Each mark has a heavy and then a pointed end. They are very small, tiny even. They are a dark reddish brown and they appear in two large arc like groupings. The two arcs are equally distant from the center of the room, and the arcs span from one long wall to the other, which make an odd sort of ellipse. But there are none along the long lengths of each wall. Yes, there is a ceiling fan, but the splatter patterns are in no way a spin art like image. They go every which way, no single origin direction. The marks come off somewhat easily with water, and leave a reddish brown stain on a tissue or rag when removed. I couldn’t find marks on flooring, fabric, furniture, and they do not appear outside the room. Greg imagined an injured bat, circling the room repeatedly hitting the ceiling and leaving blood splatter. That’s our best working theory, but no carcass has been found and no blood pooled anywhere or smeared. Help. What do you think?

2023.06.02 17:11 mcarterphoto Memory lane: small and one-man business video shops, what were your big game-changers?

I've had a few conversations lately about the game-changing events for the smaller video producers. I'm not talking big-cinema-crew productions - this is the guys that shoot small biz to big corporate stuff, we tend to own everything vs. rentals and it's often one-man-band or an assistant. Here's my list:
The Panasonic DVX-100B/Canon XL2 era. 16x9 cameras with a more "cinematic feel", excellent color science and controls, XLR ins and good preamps. The DVX is what moved me from being a stills shooter to offering video around 2004 or so. This was the start of an explosion/arms race of video cameras - from tape to (remember those P2 cards?), to a sort of faux HD to full HD.
The spinner era - anyone remember 35mm lens adapters? This was an odd minute in history - even pro camcorders struggled with shallow DOF and bokeh; but what if you could take a fast camera lens, project it onto a spinning or vibrating ground glass, and shoot the projected image with your camcorder and a closeup diopter? Some crazy-expensive solutions came from this idea, followed by cottage-industry tools in the $1-$2K range, along with a big and obsessed DIY contingent trying different things. It was pretty much killed by…
The DSLR revolution - everyone remembers the 5D, but that little Rebel T2i (550D)? It really blew the market open, and lots of good work was done on that cheap body - I used one with adapters for my Nikkors until Nikon finally caught up with video quality, maybe around the D7100 era. (I still pull out the Rebel for charity gigs where I need a third or fourth shooter. It's still very pretty video when you have decent light).
Manufacturers embrace the DSLR crowd. From major players to one-man "cottage industry" players in Asia with access to CNC milling tools, before 3D printing went mass market. (Remember the "Indian Matte Box?" I've yet to replace mine; $300 and everything I need in a 2-stage box). The Rode blimp, the Fotga DP-100 follow focus ($160), and every cheese plate and rod system component you could imagine for rigging, all on Amazon. We went from vehicle-TV panels repurposed for video to really competent, full-featured small monitors for a couple hundred bucks.
The Kessler KC-8 Crane - for about a grand, a very sturdy, all-metal 8' jib that setup in minutes. Suddenly some hollywood-style moves are in your SUV or van, and it was a client-impresser. Affordable gimbals mean it's now more of a motion-time lapse rig for me, but I still use mine with the 5' tip for product stills and video, it's the most versatile, fast-change "tripod" I've ever owned.
The end of tungsten and the evolution of LEDs. Man - a COB LED that's a 575 HMI equivalent and will run on a pair of v-mounts? If someone told you that was coming 15 years ago? I still have lots of tungsten fixtures, but they're rarely used. Remember how pricey tungsten softboxes were? Remember Kino Flo's ownership of the market, then the Asian Biax knockoffs? And it seems like overnight, LEDs came of age. Are any of you guys still packing biax flos?
Gimbals and drones. I was shooting a project in a big studio facility that was also a top rental house, when I saw my first gimbal. That thing was like $10k or $20k or something? Now a capable gimbal for a Mirrorless rig can be had for a couple hundred bucks. Remember struggling to master a knockoff Steadicam and realizing it was as big a skill as shooting was? And while there's still so much distracting drone footage ("look, I'm a drone shot!!! Wheee!"), we've got really capable and affordable drones when we want what were once helicopter or giant-crane shots. I don't even own one, since I can hire a capable guy with the gear for a couple hundred a day.
After Effects and camera tracking. Seems like this is more a specialty thing, but I've got a rep as the guy who can "fix anything" in footage, and camera tracking has joined motion tracking as a repair tool - and gives us fantastic creative options and can make stock footage into custom footage. We're about to hit a new era with machine learning that may make facial blemish repairs, removing spots and stains, logos on warped and moving surfaces, and compositing even faster.
Mirrorless. 4K and 6K and 8K, big frame rates, a built-in EVF for shoulder shooting, and the real biggies in my opinion - actually usable and reliable AF with face and eye detection, and fantastic low-light capability. Come on guys, remember when 600 ISO was pushin' it and you had to run everything through NeatVideo? Now 2-3k ISOs are no problem, and we're getting high bit rates or even ProRes to the card. And as a stills shooter, man - eye detection is the shit.
Machine Learning. This is gonna impact the hell out of us, in unpredictable ways. But the big mind-blowegame changer for me has been a cheap and simple little audio plugin - Waves Clarity VX. It just "knows what a voice is", it requires no noise sample or audio lead-in, you turn a freaking knob and on-set noises just go away. It takes even the "air" sounds from footage, but leaves the "airiness" of voices. And it's under fifty bucks. I've stopped giving a shit about HVAC and passing traffic in audio. It's had a huge impact on my workflow (I really, really want voices that are "present" and silky, and I want compression to not be lifting room sounds along with voices - even the better NR plugins can make a voice sound like ass). Maybe the end-game of this tech is SkyNet nuking all our cities (or some guy in India taking a still of the CEO and making a killer video interview) but for now? Bring it!!!
So - what's your list?

2023.06.02 17:02 endersgame69 Kayobi's Days Off C14

The car dropped me off the middle of downtown, the neon lights and billboard videos were everywhere, it was a little flashy for my taste, honestly. I like some things about the city, but the mass crowds, mobs, really… they just don’t suit me. Maybe because I’m a swapper? Maybe because it’s just too busy, and it doesn’t fit with my desire to do nothing.
I craned my head back and looked up at the high tower where my target lived and probably worked. ‘I have to hand it to this country, they’re very precise.’ I mused, the exact number of his residence… I briefly considered a dramatic entrance, sprouting wings and shooting up from the ground like a superhero and smashing into the window in the form of an avenging angel.
But that… no. ‘Everybody in this country has a camera. Sooner or later I’d have to explain it, then goodbye vacations to Earth for at least a hundred years.’ I dismissed my melodramatic thought and went about it another way.
There wasn’t much I knew about Yakuza types, but odds are they owned the building he was living in. They’re a pretty efficient organization, all things considered.
That meant… “Alright they’ll have security.” I mumbled, ‘Invisibility is so boring!’ I cursed under my breath when I realized how easy that would be. I began tapping my feet on the curve as thunder rumbled overhead and clouds began to threaten rain, lightning flickered in the sky, it wouldn’t be long before I’d get drenched standing here… ‘Then I’ll have to do laundry…I hate laundry.’
I really wanted to be dramatic and make a point… ‘Fine.’ I rolled my eyes.
I walked through the front of the building, the glass doors, clean and perfect, slid open, and true to my expectations not only was there a slender woman working behind a computer, the elevator controls were not ‘by’ the elevator.
They were on the wall behind her alcove where a very large man in a black suit stood wearing a sword on his hip. ‘Huh, and I thought that was just for the movies… the gun laws here are stricter than I thought.’
Even if I couldn’t do things quite the way I wanted, I could do something else. I was an unusual sight at least, and that curious look that I drew from the pair became cautious. Her hand reached beneath her desk, while the large fellow by the elevator controls squared off to face me.
I pulled out the wallets and watched the two relax.
“Excuse me, I’m so sorry to bother you, but I came to return these. ‘Wait, if nobody catches me… did it really happen?’ I had to wonder. It wasn’t like anybody ever checked… and these guys were scum, nobody would care…and if they were out of the way?
Obviously I couldn’t do anything to the whole building. And that was overkill even in my line of work.
“They were dropped at the Toriyama store in the Shinjai district.” I explained, and the relaxed air was gone as what I said sank home.
“Floor one zero six.” The woman said, and I could swear she looked at me with pity.
“Oh… but um, the addresses on here are-” I fluttered my eyelashes at the pair and put on a nice, innocent voice.
“She said what she said.” The musclehead interrupted.
I put on a pouty face, “Oh… OK, but can’t you…?” I stopped when he hit the elevator control for me and the golden doors slid wide open.
“Alright… I’ll… I’ll go.” I darted my head over my shoulder like I was thinking about leaving, maybe making a run for it, then clutched my purse and scurried through the door.
I’m not a half bad actress if I do say so myself. I smirked and cracked my knuckles as I went up to the very top floor.
I was fairly sure I would have a welcoming party for me, and as I went up, I realized that the die was cast. ‘If I’m defending myself…’
[E’grahcrevo rettahs dna tlem] I cast the spell with my hand behind my back and against the elevator, and an electrical pulse went up and down the building, frying the electronic components just as the elevator came to a halt. I did not envy whoever had to try to fix those later.
The lights shattered, plunging everything into darkness. With no cameras, no lights, no nothing, I had no reason to fear getting caught.
So… I swapped. My arms thickened and the mana of my body began to expand around my core self, greatly increasing my size, from a human woman slightly over a meter and a half tall, to a nine and a half foot tall creature of the Fletosian wastelands, with razor sharp claws and a gigantic maw that could bite a man in half… it was a good look.
I could hear them shouting, asking for answers…answers I would give them, but that they wouldn’t need.
I let out the roar of the Fletosian warbeast, and shoved my hands through the metal elevators in one clean thrust. Light began to stream in, and screams of alarm went up.
I’m sure they were expecting a small woman that could be intimidated into answers.
But it was my answers that were the intimidation.
I stepped into the room, hard, cracking and shaking the floor as tore the elevators free and stepped into view. Screams went up, and a shot went off.
‘Alright so a few of them have guns.’ I chuckled and backhanded the nearest of the set, they were stepping back, their guns blazing, the flashes giving brief glimpses of my horror as I stalked toward them one after another. I was in front of the exit. There was no way out.
They were trapped in here with me. The doors were electronic, and there wasn’t even any backup power, I’m sure the lower floors, at least a few down, heard it all, for all the good it would do.
My claws ripped through another, who toppled with a howl.
I will spare you the details.
It wasn’t hard to figure out who the one in charge was, he was the oldest, backing away while the younger ones tried to defend him and themselves. All the while I was wondering… which is more likely to get me caught? Leaving them alive, or dead? That’s what the question came down to… if they were dead, the human authorities might investigate, and I was seen in my normal disguise…
‘Damnit… in your desire to not get wet and to play the Queen of the stage, you made a mistake, Kayobi… if they’re alive, it’ll stay nice and unofficial. Just a warning.’ I told myself, and one by one I picked them up and smashed them against the wall, if they moved or got up, I picked them up, squeezed out a scream, and smashed them there again.
Until there was one old man left with a balding scalp and surprisingly quick hands digging through a desk. He pulled out a handgun and leveled it at my chest with trembling hands.
I stopped as if the desk were a real obstacle. “Shoot me.” I said in a gutteral echoing monster voice that I borrowed from some old movies.
The gun went off. “Again.” I ordered him.
Again he shot, his lips were trembling so much I could see his teeth reflect each flash as his noise of fear became a high pitched whine, and I waited until he emptied the entire clip to no avail.
I held out the wallets and dropped them on the desk between the two of us. He looked down.
“Take them.” I said, and one hand came away from the weapon which… he was still dry firing at me as if a bullet would magically appear.
He then took the wallets and shoved them in his pocket.
‘I forgot to come up with a cool name for myself?! How did I do that?! How do I forget the cool nickname?!’ I cursed myself and just breathed hard and heavy, the hot breath kissed his sweating face, my open maw was like a chasm of doom just waiting to swallow him up.
“Shinjai. Belongs. To the Devil of Shinjai. Never. Come. Again. Or next time, I will paint this room with your blood.” I said, my bright amber eyes gleaming down at him, my grayish blue flesh gave me an almost ghostly look as the lightning outside that began in earnest, flashed and reflected against my body.
He nodded, numb, disbelieving… he was making noises that might have been words, but they didn’t want to come out.
I reached up to his gun and closed my hand over his, each finger was as thick as his whole hand, and a hundred times as strong. I began to tighten my grip, and he yanked his hand away while I crushed the weapon like tissue paper and dropped it on his desk.
“Never.” I warned him one more time.
“N-ever.” He vowed and looked at the heap of battered and broken yakuza.
I could read his face like a book, he was wondering if they were alive.
They were. But they’d be worse for wear and probably need a lot of stitches.
Wings began to emerge from my back, and I went to the wall full of windows and smashed them open, the high, howling winds blew papers around everywhere and rain began to seep into the building, I gave him one more lingering look… and jumped, spreading my wings, I began to fly home, watching his dumbfounded, stupid expression as I began to shrink into the distance.
He was probably already questioning everything about what happened, but he couldn’t very well report it to the police, and the injuries were real. With no record, and nobody willing to talk, it would be a drunken rumor and nothing more… and my little home away from home would be quite peaceful.
I made a mental note, ‘Make sure those bills get paid tomorrow, then I need to contact Celia… I’ll need her help next.’ I thought, and yawned as I realized it was late, and I still needed to eat, then sleep… then get up the following morning and…
‘Oh my… this is going to be a lot… I might need help after all.’ I shivered to think of all the shows that I might miss, but then on the other hand…
‘It’ll be a great day for binge watching.’ I thought with a smile as my place finally came back into view, and the rain began to pour.

2023.06.02 17:01 endersgame69 Adopted By Humans VII C13

I had a feeling I knew what was being asked of Fauve. A young media expert with smarts, ambition, ability, and whose work was slowly creeping outward into my counterparts among the other species…and who had already developed a rapport with dangerous ones to the point where she had no fear of them?
And one more thing.
She’s terribly cute.
This is hard to explain to some species, but the simple fact of the matter is that as an unmodified human with no meaningful combat training and only a reasonable level of fitness associated with a normal level of activity… Fauve appeared to be distinctly nonthreatening. She did not tower over ‘most’, the maxiki notwithstanding. She did not have any evident savage appendages or claws, and even her canines were underdeveloped even relative to my own.
Simply put… she did not look like an apex predator whose species was like a coiled spring ready for the pressure holding it down to release and spring it to undreamt of heights.
With a slender frame and wide, intent eyes, you had to be familiar with the common divergences of predator and prey to recognize that she was from a predator species at all. For example the front seated eyes for depth perception as opposed to the side facing eyes to search for predators. The slight canines for the tearing of meat after a creature is defleshed. The upright body that let them see farther.
She wasn’t even particularly fast, so you’d have to know enough about human anatomy to know that a tribe of her kind could walk almost anything to death.
So, Fauve looked harmless. It didn’t hurt that any attempt at delving into her identity would reveal that it was being in danger that ultimately led to her coming into her current state.
Of course, I knew the truth. In a strange sort of way, if Bonny Red was right, and I was more dangerous than she, then Fauve was at least as dangerous as me, you see. I wanted to change one Empire, one people. All else was an afterthought that I saw as a possibility but could be developed later.
Fauve had her eyes set on the whole galaxy, and my work was one of the weapons in her arsenal.
Do you see why I adore humans so? They are beautiful, dangerous, charming, kind, and relentless all at once, when something tickles their ambitions.
I will not trouble you with the drab details of my backchannel work, it is as it seems. I relayed a request to the league fighters. The fighters reached out to their embassy on Earth. The embassy received my message, a time was ‘suggested’ and I relayed that and then they would handle the rest themselves.
It was done in the time it took to finish lunch and write about it here, which was to say, about an hour.
To pass the time, I chose to amuse myself in the fruits of one of Fauve’s projects. I had a headset to engage in the game world that Fauve made, and followed the story she laid out. My character began as a family man, a wife, hair like ink, and the slight almond shape to her eyes that marked her heritage as coming from the far east.
In the game I played, she held a child who was a mix of both of us, and my role was that of a scientist… for three ‘days’ I tended ordinary tasks and played through the preprogrammed warmth of their household. Then I got to see the world erupt in flames outside of our window.
From there, safety. Cold storage… and my wife and child were stolen, from within the glass, I heard the ones taking them say, “They agreed to this…”
The scene faded out… and when I was ‘awake’ I was not alone, or the same. For one, I now had animalistic features, as did they… and yes, my ‘family’ was there. And I played for sixty in-game days until I died… only to take over and play as my wife, then when she died… I took over playing as my daughter. The game carried me through generations, parent to child, until I found myself playing a very familiar face.
Usagi.
I do love my humans, particularly Fauve… but they’re very good at ripping your heart out.
It was a combination adventure and survival game played over generations, and a history lesson that ended with my character’s demise, right down to her final words, and even her real voice.
Thinking of the horrors of the human past, everything took on a kind of urgency that it was difficult to describe, like being caught in the midst of a battle and knowing you must do something, but knowing anything you might do could just as easily lead to your death as your salvation.
I took the headset off and closed out the game. I had to do something… productive, I suppose.
I stretched out, laid myself back on my bed, and stretched myself out yet again. It was hard to be productive right now. It just felt like I was being pressed to death by an invisible weight…from every direction.
I grabbed my datapad and switched the screen over to my cooperation structure to do a little other work… it might work, it might not, but if it fails I lose nothing but credits. While if it works, who can say what positive impact might follow in the future?
What I was doing was going for the compensation section where pay and bonuses for players were managed. I selected my ‘discretionary’ options. As founder and the head of both organizations, in theory under the old human system I had total control over everything, in reality under that system there was an amalgamation of checks and balances that… frankly didn’t work very well, from what I’ve seen.
Under the new system, founding documentation always included discretionary percentages to where the head could act on budgets without oversight, beyond which changes had to be run through a board that handled day to day operations.
I wanted to provide an incentive for more species to send competitors to Ballyball and toward my fighting tournament, to that end, compensation needed to go up. If I wanted the Hundred Terrors to all be represented within three years, I’d need to increase the profit considerably, and expanding the range of players would further my ‘bonding’ experiments.
After this volume was released, I was asked if I ever felt guilty about essentially ‘manipulating’ so many into positions that not only caused injury, but also potentially toyed with their emotions in unpredictable ways.
No.
That is my answer.
No.
Not really.
Or if I did, not enough to get in the way of doing it. It wasn’t about my career anymore. Perhaps this is just proof that I am a dlamisa…
Or perhaps it is just proof that I am, and was, and maybe always will be, just as damaged as everyone else in my species.
Sometimes the right thing to do isn’t evident.
Sometimes the right thing to do will just get a lot of innocent people killed.
And sometimes the only way to do anything right, to save a lot of lives, to make a lot of lives better, is to do the wrong thing.
Even if that means a few have to go down hard for that to happen.
If a few bruised and bloody people in an arena played a part in making sure worlds didn’t burn, then it was absolutely worth it.
I’ll accept the judgment of history for my actions, because it means that even if I was wrong, there are people still alive to judge me for them.

2023.06.02 16:55 endersgame69 Kayobi's Days Off C10

Turning invisible is a very funny sort of magic. Once you use it, it’s perfect. However, you ‘cannot’ use it while you’re presently being observed. I don’t know exactly why, it has something to do with the observer principle of the quantum entanglement and wave function collapse. The basic idea is that if the wave function has collapsed, the ‘yes or no’ is a confirmed ‘yes’ through observation. Therefore it cannot be altered again in that single present. You have to find an unobserved state where you aren’t a ‘yes’ in someone else’s existence, and then use magic to make yourself into the ‘no’.
Once you do that, the wave function is collapsed in the opposite direction, and the observer effect is sustaining your invisibility in the opposite direction and is easy to sustain.
There’s some other magic gobbledygoop there that I don’t really get, but that’s my understanding of it.
Since swappers are the only species known to be able to actually use magic, nobody else can actually do anything to counter it, at least… not that I know of, and if it had happened, then I’d have probably heard of it.
Anyway, I cast my spell as soon as I was out of sight of cameras or people, [T’cefrep y’tilibisvni Kayobi] and just like that, I was not so much as a ghost.
I went back inside the hospital and found the nearest elevator, then took it up to the ninth floor.
I did feel a little bad about the security guard, if there was one, that might have been watching the cameras and wondering if the ghost of a patient was wandering the halls and using the elevators.
Could I have taken the stairs? Maybe. OK, yes, but that would be harder, and before you say ‘teleport, then’ do you have any idea how hard it is to teleport that precisely? What if I ended up in a restroom stall with somebody in there? No thank you.
So I took the easy way. It was after all… easy.
She was awake, I knew that right away, but trying very hard not to be. Without magic, humans have to turn to drugs, narcotics, gasses, things of that nature that will force sleep on someone unable to get it comfortably, and many of those are dangerous or addictive, as such, sometimes the pain is safer to endure.
“Hi there.” I said after going into the room and dispelling my magic.
She rolled over on her side, there was a persistent tremor to her body. I wore a smile on my face as if it was first thing in the morning and she was just out cleaning a mat by beating it over the side of the balcony.
Suki Toriyama was a slightly built woman in her late thirties who looked like a woman in her early twenties and acted like a woman in her early forties who had the wisdom and good sense of someone in her eighties… except for right now.
Right now she was a woman in her late thirties who looked like one in her nineties who had the worrisome tendencies of someone in their teens and the bodily control of either a toddler who hadn’t quite grasped how to use their limbs yet.
“Hi… Kayobi… nice to… see you. I thought. Visiting hours. Were over.” She was wincing with every word, the poor thing. Humans are so damn… fragile.
“Meh, I’m visiting, so obviously not, right?” I asked and grabbed a chair, I gave it a quick yank, a spin, and rolled it over to her bedside and flopped myself down on it. “So, what ails you?” I asked.
“Stuff. Also things. Don’t worry. I’ll be fine.” She said with a weak smile on her face that tried to look better than it could.
She wanted privacy… I can understand that, so I let it go and asked, “How’s Jin holding up?”
“He’s. Good boy.” She said. It wasn’t the best structured sentence I’ve ever heard.
“So… you will be fine, right? You’re sure about that?” I leaned over a little bit and reached out to cover her hand.
“He’ll… fine… be fine. I. I will be.” She corrected herself.
“What about the store… is that staying open?” I asked. “Your store is absolutely vital to my NEET life… if it doesn’t stay open, that’s a problem for me, you know…” I gave her hand a squeeze, and after she huffed, she coughed several times and rolled onto her back.
It seemed to me she was gathering her strength to speak, and so I waited.
“The store… Jin offered to run it. Drop out of school… no. He… deserves a future… better one than I could give him…” Suki blinked her eyes hard and squeezed them shut.
“Shame. It’s a nice store. I like it. But… It’s only a store… I’ll sell it so he can afford to live on his own, till he graduates… then he can go to college…” Suki looked from the ceiling to the glass window, but not at me.
If I wasn’t sure she was going to be fine before, I was now sure that she was pretty well doomed.
‘I don’t want her to be doomed.’ I thought.
“If the store stayed open, and he could go to school still, could he go to college then?” I asked.
“Yes… but… I can’t… hire anyone. Profit is… just enough.” She said, then darted her eyes to me as I pulled my hand away from hers and put it to my chest.
“I’ll do it.” I said. “Your store is absolutely vital to my NEET lifestyle, if your store isn’t there, it’ll mean that… chores,” I shivered, “will get harder to do, take longer, I might even have to shop in more than one place.” I gave my head a vigorous shake, casting my hair around behind my head like a fiery tornado.
“Absolutely unacceptable. More shopping? More time on chores? Nope. No way, lady. I’ll handle the store, and I’ll keep it open.”
“But… I can’t pay you.” She said and looked at me, dumbfounded.
“Did I ask for money? I swear, did this affect your hearing?” I waved my hand at the machine she was hooked up to. Thankfully the tube in her mouth wasn’t so big she couldn’t talk, I didn’t even want to think what was in that thing, whether it was stuff going in or out or… what. Plus her voice was now weird… didn’t like that either, not one bit.
She still didn’t answer, but she was at least looking at me.
“Listen, let me do it for a week, Jin can bring you the books, if you’re not happy or if I bow out, you can sell it just as well a week from now as you can today. Then after you’re better, you come back, and maybe… do my laundry for me and cook some meals for a few months and we call it even. Oh and if you could clean my place a few times for me too… that’d be great.”
She smiled around the tube in her mouth, a little of who she was slipped back into place, and Suki nodded. “Alright… my purse… there.” She tilted her head toward the bed. “Key… third pocket. Right side. Open it tomorrow. But… problem… there’s-”
“Can do.” I said. I had to cut her off before she could change her mind, so I snatched up the oversized black purse and began rifling through it, rustling the myriad of nonsense that human women carried around all the time until I found the pocket and the set of keys.
I pulled out the one I’d need, held it up, and when she winked, I dropped her purse unceremoniously back where it was and said, “Relax, it’s in good hands. I won’t let anyone threaten my nearly choreless existence.” I said and gave her an encouraging smile, “And then when you get back, I can’t wait to have your cooking.”
I licked my lips at the very thought, Suki Toriyama was an amazing cook, so… I had a delightful time ahead of me. She was about to say more, but I held my hand over her and said, “Why don’t you just get some sleep now, and then I’m sure you’ll feel better.” I then cast a quick spell, [G’nol peels eno h’tnom Suki Toriyama] That would keep her out for a good long while. It was probably for the best that she was smiling when she fell asleep, generally speaking, when it came to magic, the mood of the receiver impacted their experience with it. Basically this way, she’d probably have good dreams.
The white flash of light however, had clearly drawn somebody’s attention, I could hear voices in the hallway.
“I heard voices… but nobody should be visiting at this hour… then there’s that flash of light… we should at least check. Poor woman doesn’t have long, we can’t let anything stress her out.”
They were getting closer.
The problem with invisibility is, it takes a few seconds to completely vanish, I mean, not long, maybe thirty seconds or so, but they were closer and this was going to get awkward fast.
So I thought on my feet, I shifted my body into the form of an angel out of their mythology, white wings, white robe, gold hair and I even improvised a halo.
Then I cast my invisibility spell.
By the time a doctor and nurse rounded the corner of the hall and looked into the room, I’d gone from solid to translucent, and all they saw was a mythical being holding a hand over a dying woman, reflected in the glass window, while the actual me stood behind a screen and finished disappearing.
Thankfully the wave function collapse went my way and I was back to being invisible.
They rushed over to the screen and slid it open to find… nobody there. “Did you see…?” An old man in a white coat and glasses asked and looked at the young nurse at his side.
“I did… but it couldn’t be… could it?” She asked the doctor, and looked down at the sleeping patient while I walked past them and out of the room, left the hall and the building, and when I was outside again, I teleported outside of my apartment, turned back into my usual disguise, and headed for bed.
Avoiding chores was going to take a lot of work on my part, so I’d need a good night’s sleep.

Looking for history on Gwen Knight
Hi All, I own a home in Yakima with some stained glass artwork I believe to have been made by Gwen Knight.
I’ve done some searching and it looks like she had a studio in Langley at one time. Does anyone know where I can learn more about her? I’d love to see other examples of her work or maybe purchase some of her art. From what I’ve been able to find it sounds like she expanded into blown glass as well.
Thanks!!

2023.06.02 16:31 Playful-Ocelot-7438 Questions we all have regarding Xreal Beam

I use these glasses daily to allow me location freedom when working from home. I work mainly from Samsung Dex, and the Parsec app on my android phone to connect to my work laptop. However, I'll also use the glasses with Nebula for Windows on occasion to allow a triple monitor setup.
So, I just ordered the Xreal Beam, and I have a few questions regarding functionality.

  1. How will this affect the android experience? Will this allow more than one monitor (nebula android experience, but with all apps)?
  2. Will I still be able to use Nebula for Windows when connected wirelessly via Beam to have a triple monitor setup?
  3. Realistically, how bad will the input lag be?
  4. Can I connect phone > Beam > glasses with C to C cables to allow longest battery life?
  5. How long until my Beam arrives, and I can test all of the new features?
  6. Aside from a wireless connection, and a spacial display, will this device provide any additional features to the glasses?

I believe this tech is the future, and I think we're all excited to have some of these questions answered. Thanks in advance!

2023.06.02 15:55 noriiuwu chrysalide des cieux

nopony asked for this but i remastered an old story to be in equestria!!! starring my OCs ofc 🤭🤭
It was a cold January day, and the clocks were striking twelve. Victor Arsenault, his dewy, juniper eyes drifting to the emerald chrysalis, washed with the soft winter light. The reflecting colours of the junebug green cocoon danced joyfully as if yearning for all the pleasures of Spring. Its divine yet modest glow pined for the fresh strawberries, tea sandwiches, and cakes of afternoon teas enveloped in the warm April air.
“Chrysalide Des Cieux, huh…” he mumbled to himself.
As his rough hooves stroked through his grizzled mane and he gazed deeply into his green visage, he let out a bitter sigh. A chrysalis from the heavens… it has brought me nothing but prosperity yet guilt plagues my heart when I lose myself in its celestial charms. Though the verdant cocoon’s ethereal radiance rivalled the garden of Eden, traces of villainy slithered under each layer. As Victor levitated the pupa and tucked it in his vest, he heaved himself from his bureau and drifted his attention to the snow-covered garth outside his lunette window. The sky donned her crystal-white gown that morning, the drapes kissing the grounds of Equestria. He ambled to the door, the withered wooden planks creaked under each trot he took and as he set hoof outside, the brisk air caressed his cheeks. Meek blackcaps serenaded the delights of Winter as they rested on mistletoe branches, the berries bunched like drops of ruby. The newly clothed trees rose like white fairy tails in that wintry scenery, for the grey clouds had bequeathed a bounty of snow.
As the snow crunched under his hooves, a choreographed ballet conducted by the light blew over the opal clearing danced under the light. Soft soughs of the wind mingled with the distant cries of torment. As Victor toiled onward, the cries grew louder and the billows of snow drenched in carnelian and the scent of iron became increasingly apparent. Right as he had intended to turn his head away, the familiarity of the scene gravitated him. Unease and terror brewed and churned in the pits of his stomach as dread swept him off his hooves. A disfigured crown, embellished with mutilated cuprite stained the marble coat garnet. “Velebeth…” Victor stifled as his husky voice trembled.
His thoughts spiralled out of control, desperately trying to uncover the cause of her passing. The mare’s delicate, porcelain coat plastered by her once opaque white nightgown, now permeated with her blood, her stiff, lifeless body strung out as if she was a lamb to the slaughter. He shook his head. She’s gone. She’s really gone… His clouded eyes darted desperately with the metronome in his chest growing faster.
The distortion of reality made anything and everything in-cohesive. The tracks of sanity have been mangled beyond recognition, littered with industrial movements and peppered with echoes of what used to be instruments. Fragments of melodies overlapped one another, fighting for the limelight which often made him ponder whether either one of those tunes really ever existed at all.
Though his heart was still beating, the essence of what made him, him, had decayed, his mind wilted and withered, leaving only a hollow husk of a stallion he once was. His eyes melted into the pool of malachite, drops of pearls welled. “What is there to live for in life? For all the respect and charity of others purely because of the occupation you fill? These professions determine lives, granting us happiness yet never fulfillment. I am guilty of the fruits they bear though, I feel no remorse or sympathy for lives lost yet when you, Velebeth…” Victor breathed. “What has become of us? How were we so blind to this? Velebeth, my love, you won’t need to wait any longer, for I shall embark on a journey to resurrect you, even if the lives of other ponies must trot to the other side in exchange.” His coarse hooves clutched the chrysalis, ripping it from its nest and shattering it. Puffs of smoke envelop his flushed face as he drags the disfigured gem through the snow.
As the clouds of smoke washed over the late unicorn, her sides began rising and falling. Though a pulse was present, her mind and motion did not return. Before anypony else had stumbled upon such a crime against nature, the stallion unicorn mustered the last sliver of magic and teleported both him and the mare back to his store. As he hurriedly shut every window and closed every blind, he set Velebeth into a spare mattress, tucking her under a thick, padded quilt.
