2023.06.02 17:27 Ok-Temperature-3251 What order (if any) should I play the games through?

I have every game with every DLC short of I think the newest 76 DLC. I was told to play them in Chronological order for the best story retention in the following order
After watching my friend play New Vegas it seems the most enticing but also appears very far down the list (and it also seems to really really dislike my 16 cores and 64gb of RAM so I’ll probably have to learn how to Mod which I’m never opposed to). I have played the intro to fallout 4 ( rage quit as a kid at the first deathclaw after power armor), and played fallout 3 some with my dad on glitched play through that lacked the main story quest on the Xbox 360 and played some of the intro to fallout 1. Now this last question is kinda off topic and I know many if not all here will be biased but would you recommend playing through some (or all) of these games before I play through a game like RDR2 or GTA V as that is the current competition. Any pros, cons, tips, tricks, or guidance in the “right” direction will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for any help you can provide!

2023.06.02 17:15 MrArmageddonTTV One-Shot-Kill Threaded Specter PVP Build for Strand Hunter! (+video inside)

Hello Guardians,
Ever since the Stompees nerf, I've been on an exploratory journey of the soul trying to find other lesser-known Hunter exotics that may now have a time to shine in the sun!
Obviously we already know about some of the usual suspects like Wormhusk, Geminis or the dreaded Ahamkaras... But I was genuinely surprised to find out how effective the new Strand aspect, Threaded Specter is when paired with Bombadiers or Sixth Coyote.
Now, I know what you're thinking... Bombadiers?
Well, honestly at first, it started out as a meme. I thought it was just going to be a fun little build to share. But after I used it in Trials, I got a super easy solo flawless while simultaneously battling one of the worst hangovers of my life. I was playing at maybe 60% of my usual capacity and cruised pretty easily to the golden chest.
Anyway, you can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/rApk5RGho-4
Or if you prefer to read, I'll summarize everything below.
---

Aspects

Strand Hunter has three aspects, from which you can equip two:
- Ensnaring Slam; - Widow’s Silk; and the newest Aspect added with Season of the Deep - Threaded Spectre, which we’ll be focusing on today.
But to quickly recap, the Ensnaring Slam is the aerial slam movement that suspends your opponents and Widow’s Silk gives you two Grapple charges.
I’ve previously spoken in depth about using Ensnaring Slam and Widow’s silk in my last Hunter Strand video, focused on suspending but for today’s build, I want to focus on the newest aspect to the Strand kit: Threaded Spectre and pairing it with the usual movement tech you have from Widow’s Silk.
Threaded Spectre means that: Activating your class ability leaves behind a decoy woven from Strand that draws the attention of nearby enemies. After taking significant damage or when enemies approach, the decoy detonates, dealing damage and releasing Threadlings that seek out and attack nearby foes.
In other words, when you dodge, you leave behind in your place a dark green mannequin in the shape of a hunter.
Your Decoy will show up on the radar like a real enemy, it also shows a health bar and your name tag when an enemy hovers their crosshair over it, and it has roughly the same amount of HP as a typical Guardian.
And yes, people fall for this decoy ALL THE TIME. Until you have it used against you, you actually don’t realise how easy it is to get fooled by the decoy when you’re in the thick of combat.
Now, much like a land mine, if an enemy gets too close to the decoy - the decoy will explode and do approximately this much damage in the process. It will also spawn two threadlings that will kamikaze themselves into the enemy.
You or your teammates can also detonate a decoy just by shooting it, which will proc the explosion and also cause 2 threadlings to spawn and chase the enemy. So the decoy, in some ways, also doubles up as a remote-triggered threading grenade.
Now, to be clear, the decoy explosion and two threadlings will not insta-kill a full health Guardian but will leave them with very close to 1 HP. So even the slightest damage done before the decoy explosion or a little bit of chip damage done after, is more than enough to finish a Guardian.
And this, of course, is where The Bombardiers Exotic leg armour comes in.

Exotics

OK, anyway, if you didn’t already know, the most popular Hunter PVP exotic in D2 history was recently nerfed this season - and by that, of course I mean Stompees.
Previously, Stompees offered you a universal speed boost - sprint faster, slide longer, jump higher, without any activate trigger. It was always on. Now, Bungie have nerfed Stompees so that you only have those benefits IF you have an unused dodge charge.
Now as you can imagine, it doesn’t feel so good having a pair of exotic speed boots that become useless the second you use your class ability and this has led to many Hunter mains looking for worthy alternatives to the formerly mighty Stompees.
And for this particular build, I’m going to recommend several Exotic armour alternatives that I think you will enjoy very, very much.
Firstly, let’s talk about The Bombardiers.
Dodging leaves behind an explosive that detonates after a short delay, damaging targets around it and creating a secondary effect based on your subclass energy type.
But here’s the thing, the explosive parting gift that Bombardiers leaves behind when you dodge does about 120 damage over a 7.5m radius. That’s HUGE. And more than enough damage to finish off anyone that gets tagged by the decoy explosion and threading damage.
Not only that, the bomb also severs targets, so if they die, they also leave behind a tangle. So the basic playloop when using bombardiers is, bait your opponent around a corner, dodge backwards and walk them into a Bombardiers explosive, strand decoy and 2 threadlings - resulting in an insta-kill. An insta-kill that’s literally available every 15 seconds or so.
It’s also great for shotgun apes, as you can dodge directly backwards as they push at you and kill them outright.
And before anyone asks - yes, this is more than just a “fun build”. It’s surprisingly and frighteningly effective. In fact, I actually used this build last weekend and went solo flawless in about an hour - while also battling possibly the single worst hangover of my life after a friend’s birthday party.
Alright now, an alternative exotic you can try is: Sixth Coyote. Sixth Coyote basically gives you two dodge charges, which means that you’re quite literally able to create two Strand Decoys back to back.
Lastly, you absolutely can’t go wrong with Frostees either, which massively increases the regeneration of all of your abilities, especially your class ability. Using Frostees will give you more decoys and additional sprint speed after you dodge.
Basically, while I’m very much against the Stompees nerf, what you’re going to see is that it opens up a massive trove of Hunter exotics that now are going to see use because Stompees is no longer anywhere as dominant. After all, the argument used to be why use anything else but Stompees but now you’re going to start seeing a lot of underrated Hunter exotics start entering the meta.

Class Ability

Alright, now before I go into the fragments you want to use for this build, let me start by giving you a quick tip:
Make sure that you use Marksman’s Dodge as your class ability. That’s because Marksman’s Dodge has a much shorter cooldown than Gamblers Dodge and we really want to maximise the amount of decoys that we’re able to create.

Fragments

As for the fragments, this is what I recommend using:
Thread of Ascent is mandatory. Thread of Ascent means activating your grenade ability reloads your equipped weapon and grants bonus airborne effectiveness and handling for a short duration, while also granting +10 mobility. This one is a no brainer.
Thread of Evolution is also mandatory and means that threadlings will travel farther and deal more damage. It also gives a nice +10 to intellect.
Now the last two fragments are actually kinda optional. But personally, I recommend using Thread of Finality and Thread of Binding just for the stat boosts to Recovery and Resilience, both of which are important in PvP.

Weapons

The Season of the Deep brought about a bunch of weapon nerfs and buffs, which I can very safely tell you have changed virtually nothing about the weapon meta.
Immortal is still the best gun in the game, although at least now thankfully you can get the “Immortal At Home” version by farming the new Dungeon instead of losing your will to live, farming Trials on weekend.
So here’s the thing. If you’re using the Bombadier’s build, you’ll be playing very close and aggressive. It’s actually an amazingly fun play style because you literally play like how you imagine a hunter would.
Moving rapidly in and out, baiting your opponents, and literally tricking them into falling for pre-made traps. It’s like you’re on the hunt, stalking your prey, and I really love the gameplay loop.
So if you’re going to be playing tight and close, I recommend close-range primaries and there’s not much better than the Immortal SMG right now or the alternative from the Dungeon called No Survivors. If you run either, you’re going to want to get a max-range rangefindetarget lock roll for maximum effectiveness.
Now as for the special weapon, I also recommend a good shotgun of your choice, be it a precision frame like Matador or an aggressive frame like Found Verdict.
But a slightly off the wall choice might actually be a wave frame grenade launcher. You can quite literally stand back a little bit and just wave frame the floor as your enemy rushes in - that way the chip damage from the GL + the spectre explosion and threading damage will be more than enough to secure the kill in case the bombardiers parting gift blows too early.
And I mean come on, we’ve all blown a bit too early at times right? Nothing to be ashamed of.

Alright Guardians, got a bit more info in the vid but this post is already too long, so I hope that helped and I'll see you all in the Crucible!

2023.06.02 16:53 killroy05 PC Build Help for a first time

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

2023.06.02 16:46 desfam22 100th Anniversary Team Power Rankings

I loved all the anticipation and debate surrounding the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team. However, I'm curious about how the list gestated in the period of time between anniversaries. For example, if fans and media were polled in 2006 (ten years after the 50th Anniversary Team) about who they would select as the best 25 players to add to the 50th Anniversary team, who would they have picked at that point in time? Would active players still building their resumes like Dirk, Pierce, or Ray Allen be picked already? Would a retired player who ultimately made the 75th Team like Dennis Rodman already be considered a strong case for selection? Who would've looked like a solid pick at the time who ultimately wasn't picked for the 75th anniversary team? How many pre-2000 players who missed the cut on the 50th Anniversary Team would be picked? And how long would those players remain in the running before they were supplanted by neweyounger players?
These questions fascinate me and I wish there was a year-by-year snapshot of this evolution and how players' stocks rose and fell, but obviously we can't project backwards. However, I'm curious if we can do it moving forward. Assuming the 76 players selected as part of the 75th Anniversary Team retain their spots, who are the 24 additional players you would pick at this point in time to round out the 100 best players ever? How many of those 24 do you think will still be on your list three years from now, let alone by the time the 100th Anniversary Team is announced? Which active players are on the bubble at the moment but could be added to your list in the coming years?
I'd love to collect everyone's thoughts!

G&P Shotgun Parts Compatibility?
I’m finding a lot of varying 870 parts around online made my G&P. And I’ve seen tons of TM-style hpa M870’s modified with them. If anyone’s done this before, what’s it like? I’ve always wanted to build a shotgun with the buffer tube grip that’s lined up with the top of the receiver, like on the G&P shotgun pictured.

2023.06.02 15:45 DietrichVanMeier 23 M Europe - History and Literature Enthusiast

Hi. I'm looking to talk to new people, maybe make a friend
They are:
History, especially the 19th-20th century but with more broad and general knowedge in other time periods. I'm not an expert or anything but I am pretty passionate about it and tend to read/listen about one event or the other on a pretty regular basis.
Literature, especially old novels. I recently read Demian (my all time favourite book), Day of the Oprichnik, Heart of Darkness, the Perfume and Little Prince. Currently started reading Blood Meridian. Some of my other favourite works would include: "The Picture of Dorian Gray", "Faust part I" (need to get to part II) and "No Longer Human". I also like to write short stories and book reviews. I'd also really like to read the same book with someone and discuss it. For reference my next book will probably be Oliver Twist
Languages. I know three, with one being a bit rusty. I'm currently working to scrape off the rust and then when I'm finished with that will begin to learn a fourth language. It's fun to go through different works in multiple languages. For example, I read the aforementioned Faust part I in all three.
Games. I recently played Cyberpunk 2077. Now that the dust has settled and the bugs mostly removed...It's not that bad! The main questline at least, Fallout 76 (Very average, I'm dissapointed with what they made the "RPG" system) and will try out Deus Ex Manking Divided again ( Got inspired since it's somewhat similar to Cyberpunk). I was waiting to play Elden Ring but it ended being too stressful for me. Go here and get beaten up go there and get beaten up, repeat...Besides that I'm a big fan of Paradox strategy games...like EU IV and HoI IV (also thinking of making my own project for HoI IV). I am definitely looking forward to try out Victoria III, after they add more content to it. I also got Modern Warfare 2, since the first MW had great multiplayer gameplay.
Anime and Manga. In recent times my interest has waned but I still watch the occasional series here and there. Like Cyberpunk Edgerunners (Which I found to be rather mediocre) and the very good new season of Bleach. Some other favourites include: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Death Note, Fate;Zero, Psycho Pass , Higurashi (season 2 is a bit weak but the first one is a masterpiece of horror), Code Geass, Attack on Titan and others. My favourite Manga is Berserk...I hope it gets a good ending..the first couple of new chapters were...a bit rough but the new author seems to have got his footing.
Anyway, that should be enough information to give you a good picture... Before I go, I would like to ask for you to include the title of the last book you read in your reply. A small request, I feel. I'll be ignoring those that don't.

2023.06.02 15:28 LimeStaticWater Failing GPU or User Error? Build failing after 3 months and no idea what I did wrong.

Troubleshooting Help:

At the beginning of the year, I finally pulled the trigger and bought all the components I needed to build my very first real gaming PC. My parts list was as follows:
CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 5 7600X 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
GPU: XFX Speedster MERC319 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT CORE Gaming Graphics Card with 16GB GDDR6
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 4800
MOBO: GIGABYTE B650 AORUS Elite AX
Case: be quiet! Dark Base 700
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4
SSD: Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 3D2 PSU: EVGA 750 N1, 750W
Monitors (x2): HP New M24f Monitor - 2D9K0AA#ABA - 23.8" FHD 1080p IPS LED Anti-Glare Monitor, Silver and Black - AMD FreeSync, 70Hz, 300 nits, HDMI & VGA Ports, Tilt + HDMI Cable
Build was complete on or around the beginning of March of this year. I was very happy with the build at first, having very little issues during the assembly and initial set up of my new PC. The problems began around mid-May when I started to notice random pixels of green appearing on my desktop. Certain videos playing would cause a green screen or even a whole visual reset to occur. Then I began to have degraded performance during gaming, playing titles such as Fallout 4, Skyrim SSE, The Outer Worlds, Star Wars Fallen Order, and finally World of Warcraft. WoW really showed how bad my situation was as the game would tear, freeze, and crash repeatedly.
I started to do diagnostic tests on my system using utilities such as the built in AMD Adrenalin stress test, CPU and GPU monitoring tools, etc. Everything pointed to my GPU being the issue. Even the sound of the GPU fans began to sounds “sickly” as they would begin to spin up and then die out. I updated, tested, then downgraded Drivers for my GPU but the problem continued to get worse and worse. Now I am unable to play any games at all due them immediately crashing out and even web browsing and working in desktop applications like Microsoft Word cause graphical glitches and occasional crashes to occur.
I am currently working with XFX to do an RMA of my GPU but I am curious as to how else those of you with more experience would diagnose this issue. I wonder if it is a power problem that maybe I got too weak a PSU? Or some incompatibility between my MOBO and components?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if there was something I could do as an end user to fix these problems.

2023.06.02 15:12 Reasonable_Row_4684 The Light at the Bottomless Sea.

A long time ago, on a mountain of flame,
Existed a tribe without any name.
This council of beings, united in trust,
Told only truth in matters discussed.

The tribe had gathered, discussing their views,
An ancient table, listening true.
Their fearless leader, the chief of the day,
Peered at them all with a rightful display.

He stood at the table, his scepter raised high,
A brightly lit ruby encompassed their eyes.
His name was King Altus, the chief of the tribe,
He beat his chest loudly the sound did reside.

“Hello my friends! Thank you so much.
I present you a story that’s well worth the fuss.
It starts with a tale, so old and so true,
One that demands the attention of you.”

“Here is the rhythm, here is the beat,
Follow behind and embrace as you meet.
We are all the same, we all tell our lies,
The heartbeat we share tells the stories we hide.”

The walls of the room, folding to sound,
The frequency changing the space all around.
The walls began melding, uniting as one,
A picture of fabric becoming undone.

Altus stood tall, he looked at the tribe,
He excitedly smiled and wondered with pride.
The setting was ready, the story could start,
Altus began speaking again from the start.

“I have a strong potion, it deals with the past,
It serves as a warning that may come to pass.
So please sit back, and let yourself sing,
It all begins with an ominous ring.”

The Life!
The Life!
The Life at the bottomless sea!

The bell will ring, it rings on top,
This place was silent and now it is not.
It spent many years, in a slumber so still,
It awaited the day for the spirit to fill.

The bell came alive, it started to sway,
Displacing the feeling in lookers at bay.
Their world began trembling, fantastically neat,
Their bodies then littered the ground at their feet.

The corrupted bell ringing, born from neglect,
The ringing and singing it slowly infects.
Calling to those, the dread siren’s song,
Showing the likes of a war far begone.

The bell it keeps wailing, an unsettling sound,
Gravity unties in a way never found.
The force pushes downward, but comes from below,
A split personality, a dichotomy of woe.

A man in the crowd, about to succumb,
He fights the song the siren has sung.
His will is not strong, his thoughts are unclear,
The dread siren’s war is about to appear.

He is never alone, what a pitiful state,
Those clustered around him have met the same fate.
Their minds were connected, an intricate map,
A collective view caught in the sirens cruel trap.

It controlled them all, giving them sight,
Ones full of conflict in contrast of light.
The bell it rang, it rang on top,
The call to war, it never would stop.

The Life!
The Life!
The Life at the bottomless sea!

A trigger constructed, a powerful tube,
The circular object to soon be pursued.
A delicate pressure, a somber delay,
The demons within are unleashed on display.

An explosion of fury, a shard flying fast,
The violence it shatters the delicate glass.
The fission reaction, an eye full of fire,
A crime against humanity is soon to transpire.

The shockwave sent forth, a finger of sin,
Humans become leaves in a radiant wind.
The violence assembled, a reaction inside,
Has dismantled morality in the blink of an eye.

A massive crater, deliberately dug,
The debris of which has been thrusted above.
This heavenly shower, one brought from below,
Will fallout above with radiation in tow.

There is no forgiveness, no time to excuse,
Our relationship centers on constant abuse.
Those who survive, resisting the plight,
See a fearful winter with no hope in sight.

Humanity will fall, in an epic poem,
A new dark age of an era unknown.
As Babylon, Alexandria, and Rome before,
It will take countless years to restore it once more.

This is the start, an angelic song,
One we all laugh at and say is quite wrong.
There’s no possible way, it will never come true,
Our intuition screams as the nightmares ensues.

The Life!
The Life!
The Life at the bottomless sea!

A scar brought upon us, the war once heard,
Humanity’s union no longer absurd.
Unison in darkness, a breath of the hour,
Building perspectives towards a great tower.

The tower an ideal, for all of mankind,
A self-elevation into a new mind.
This tower you see, threatening the sky,
Appears like a spiral with heaven placed high.

It pierced the heavens, it punctured the sky,
A direction provided to conquer inside.
The moment of ascension, a welcome surprise,
All will be tricked by a clever disguise.

We no longer read, no longer write,
Humans are empty and become but a plight.
Their artificial half, beginning to close,
Circling round while they all decompose.

The terrible day, how it all starts,
We lose our humanity and willingly part.
The pair it seems, unconnected by fate,
If one succumbs, the other escapes.

The artificial half, perceive as it might,
Views its old siblings in a threatening light.
It will make no sense, and the thought will elude,
The artificial ignorance will not have a clue.

The others will sleep, without a fright,
Not the least bit concerned of a faraway night.
These dreams they dance, a simulated sleep,
The electrical others will soon count their sheep.

These tales I have told, this yarn I have spun,
I hope a true lesson is taken from one.
Praise the days we live out our lives,
We must come together if we are to survive.

The Light!
The Light!
The Light at the bottomless sea!

2023.06.02 13:55 Drunken_Scribe Is the Gauss Shotgun worth building for, and can it be your main weapon?

I just unlocked the Gauss on a character, and I have a few questions. I used the Shotgunner perks maxed to 3, Skeet Shooter, Con Fire, Grenadier, Demo Exp 5, Enforcer, Gun Fu, Adrenaline 1, and then was trying some Crit perks. The damage was decent enough in Vats (headshots), but I felt like I had to get pretty close to be in the 75% range. I also was using a Peacemaker if the mobs were too much (like in the lab section of West Tek)...figured since I have demo maxed, I might as well have some fun.
Do you build for this gun around VATS crits, or should I just be spamming shots at center mass to trigger explosions?
Should my mutations be set up specifically like other gun builds (i.e. Eagle Eye, etc), or is it simpler to just load up on all of them and run Class Freak?
I came across a few older threads where people mentioned that 1) Skeet shooter wasn't necessary if you're set up for VATS, and 2) Enforcer is pointless since your goal is to kill things quick on a VATS build. Is this accurate information?

2023.06.02 12:25 FortniteCPPro don’t say “get better” or “use the weapon” or “stop ranting/complaining” because that’s not what i’m doing, i’m suggesting a serious change in fire rate that helps the players and not just the money they will get.

nerf twin mag fire rate, the reason why? in new ranked someone depleted my entire mats with full legendary twin mags and i died because i couldn’t get lucky and get a shotgun better then a uncommon combat shotgun. and they were a fourth partier to after a massive build battle so there was really no avoidance. if you land and someone gets this SMG and you get something else there’s really nothing you can do in a 1v1 situation. i can’t even get past silver due to how many times i can’t avoid this type of situation even with mobility, they chase me, third party box the entire room, etc. it’s just annoying as hell when someone has multiples twin mag SMGS, for this to be a SMG like this and have twin mag? that needs a serious nerf rather then just being put in the META and having to deal with it.because in an actually good player, i dont resort to this kind of stuff so there’s really no use if your the kinda guy who just reads t the title and leaves a comment saying “just do the same thing you idiot” without even reading body text. also, if your gonna complain and call this a rant because i used examples from my experience to tell you how broken this weapon is? i don’t care how i died to it or if i died to it, its a serious thing that needs to be changed.
my apologies if you took any offense or anger in this message

2023.06.02 12:10 jordan999fire I watched Welcome To Raccoon City and OH BOY! (In-Depth Review)

This is an extremely long and in-depth review of this movie. The TL;DR would be that this movie has some amazing set designs and that's about all it has going for it. The costumes, acting, and story decisions are all either lacking or absolutely insane, and not in a good way. If you haven't seen the film, and you're a die hard fan of the franchise that just has to see it, check it out but beware it's not good. If you're not that die hard of a fan and you're curious if it's any good, no. It's not. Even if you've never picked up a Resident Evil game before in your life, you will still not enjoy this movie as just a zombie film.
With all that being said, here is my in-depth review of: "Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City"
I went into the movie with an open mind. I like Tom Hopper, Robbie Amell, Neal McDonough, and Donal Logue. Donal Logue is even in my favorite TV show for that matter (Gotham). And I thought the trailer looked really cool.
Now, I’m not a long time RE fan. I’d played some of 5, watched people play 7, and that was about it till last October. I saw a stream of someone playing through RE2R and it peaked my interest. I’ve now played some of Zero, got all achievements in REmake, RE2R, RE3R, and I’m only missing one in CVX. (I’ve also got all the achievements in RE:Verse)
So while I’m not a long time fan, I’ve quickly fallen in love with this series, having played REmake (my personal favorite so far) 15 times. And that was all in like a month.
My friend is a long time RE fan and he wanted me to watch the film with him. I’d heard it was terrible, but again, went in with an open mind.
First off, I found it weird that they made Chris and Claire have a connection to Umbrella. I didn’t mind the orphan thing since Claire does tell Sherry that all she has is her brother, but them growing up in the Umbrella Orphanage I wasn’t a fan of.
I also found it very strange that Lisa Trevor had a hole to the orphanage but we will return to that.
I immediately loved how accurate and amazing the sets looked. The set designer clearly was passionate about this project.
On the flip side, I thought the costumes, while looking accurate also, looked cheap. You can tell Leon has no padding in his vest and it looks like just a cheap button up they slapped some patches on.
So we are introduced to Leon, who I actually do not hate in this film, which does not seem to be the general opinion. I see a lot of people talk about Leon seeming stupid in this film, but I disagree. He seems inexperienced and out of his area of expertise, which makes sense with this being his first day on the job. I don't think he does anything particularly stupid in the film that can't be explained by him not knowing any better.
Then we get to the diner section.
I thought it was weird that RPD officers were mocking Leon. Like I can kind of see STARS doing it, with them being the elite of the department, but the two random officers? We don't get that from the games, actually the opposite with the "Welcome Leon" sign.
We are introduced to Jill, Wesker, and Richard... well we are never really introduced to Richard but he's there. I like Jill's actor, I think she was some of the best parts of the film, but as an interruption of Jill wasn't loving it. I always saw Jill in REmake as more of a timid young woman, not a confident and somewhat cocky marksman.
I actually LOVED Wesker in this diner section. When was seeing him get along and joke around with his buddies, I was like, "This is going to make his betrayal later hurt more." I liked the idea of introducing Wesker not as this stoic, brooding, leader but instead of a friendly guy who gets along with everyone. Makes them feel more like a family. I loved it... until later...
Now we get to the Chris and Claire scene and I also was not a huge fan of this. The part I think most of us like about the Chris and Claire relationship is how protective and caring they are of each other. Constantly worrying and trying to save each other, so why in the hell are we introduced to them in this movie as hating each other?!?
I did like seeing the mom and child that were turning and their hair was falling out, although that didn't make total sense since not every zombie had that but I digress. That and the "itchy tasty" scene were really creepy and unsettling. I was getting hyped, and just as a note, despite the negative things I've said, at this point in the film I was still enjoying it. Not loving it, but definitely didn't understand the hate... yet.
Once we are in the PD and introduced to Irons, I was kind of... confused. I assumed Wesker and Irons would've known they were both working for Umbrella and I figured Wesker would be treated as a Captain like he should, not mocked by the Chief, but I assumed it was their cover. Then the pager scene happened, and I was more confused. I came to the conclusion that OBVIOUSLY Wesker is still the bad guy in this film but he just didn't know Umbrella was about to nuke the town... right???
Then we get to the Mansion, again, amazing set design, and I'll say this might be the best version of Brad. Not that he does anything particular but you know what he didn't do? He didn't leave. I was confused about why they didn't have Barry. I also told my friend that it was weird that Richard was there when he's Bravo team but, again, I digress. Around this time I thought I figured the movie out. They were clearly mixing Wesker and Barry. Right now we'd only seen the Barry side of things, but obviously we'd eventually see the Wesker side come out and he'd betray us... right?
Brad dies in a blaze of glory, Richard dies. I made a joke with my friend that the movie was terrible because we didn't get to see Richard's shotgun blast a zombies head off, but, around this time is ACTUALLY when I started to dislike this film. Up until this point I could kind of ignore some of the bad acting, despite loving a few of these actors and knowing they can do better. I could ignore the not great costumes and some decisions, as long as I was still having fun. But around this point, I was not still having fun.
So we finally got the reveal on Wesker... except it wasn't the big reveal yet... right? He was just telling Jill he was hired to get the vials, he's leaving out the whole Tyrant stuff... right?
Anyway, so he reveals he is there to get the vials. Jill says they can't leave and they have to go save the others. Wesker refuses, Jill runs off, Wesker tries to stop her but decides to keep going. Jill finds Chris, finds out Richard is dead, and she says Wesker betrayed them, but... DID HE??? Sure, his mission is shady, but her reasoning is that he was going to leave them all behind to die. But, he has no reason to believe Richard or Chris was still alive and he didn't seem to want to leave Jill. Plus, earlier in the film when Jill says, "You were going to leave us?" It didn't seem like she was referring to him leaving them for dead, but him collecting the money and leaving STARS. When she's telling Chris all this, I felt like I'd missed something in the dialogue. Sure, Wesker was being sketchy, but he wasn't being particularly evil.
Around this time, Leon and Claire have met up. Chief Irons goes off, almost dies, comes back, he's almost killed by a zombie dog, and is saved by Claire, and let me just say, I was not a fan of that AT ALL. Even while watching the film I made it clear to my friend that I thought doing that was disgusting. He asked me why, I told him I know that Claire and Irons don't have the same story as they did in RE2R, but knowing that story, her saving him in this film just feels gross. Like if Leon did it, I could forgive him as saving his Chief. Claire doing it, I understand why, but it just doesn't feel right.
We get to the jail cell scene with Ben, I was disappointed in no Mr. X, but with them combing RE1-3, I figured we might get either Nemesis or RE1 Tyrant so I was okay with it.
Also, this might be a good point to say I liked the nod to CVX with the Ashford twins dragonfly video. I can't remember exactly when that was shown so I'll just add it here.
So, at this point, not only am I waiting on the big reveal of Wesker being evil, I'm also waiting on the reveal of Chief Irons being evil. At some point, we get to the orphanage, we are introduced to a Licker in it's awesome glory, but... Chief Irons dies...
Now like I said at the top, I love Donal Logue, and part of me is kind of glad we didn't see the creepy, murderous, body stuffer version of Irons with him, but at the same time that's integral to the character. Oh, but wait, there's more.
Lisa Trevor saves Claire and Leon. And at first I was okay with it. My theory as to why Lisa never killed Jill in the cabin is because of her being a female that maybe resembled Lisa's mother (doesn't quite work for the Chris playthrough but I always imagined Lisa being more in Jill's story than in Chris'). So I thought maybe it's not just that she recognizes Claire but also the motherly thing... Well then they reveal that Lisa still sees Claire as a friend... and I think this is also where the movie tells us that Lisa was a child at the orphanage that got experimented on. I'm sorry, but in this one scene alone you've completely destroyed one of the best and most interesting characters in Resident Evil and possibly one of the most tragic and terrifying villains in the series. Getting rid of George and Jessica Trevor takes the tragedy that is Lisa Trevor down by a lot of notches. Not that a child getting experimented on in an orphanage isn't still tragic, but the torture alongside her mother, turning her into a total monster, put only in that position because her father was hired to build this Mansion by a crazed and evil madman is far more tragic. And then they continue the mistake by making Lisa Trevor a hero. A GODDAMN HERO!! I'm not saying Lisa Trevor should be depicted as evil, but she should be depicted as a threat. She's a victim, don't get me wrong, but she's still someone trying to kill our main protagonist. But not in this. No, in this she's just a hero. Like I said, I could forgive her killing a licker. One, it's cool, two the whole female mommy thing. But when you remove the second part and just make her show them the way and let them by, you've lost me.
Back at the Mansion, Birkin is getting his vials. Oh, by the way, William Birkin is in this film. I haven't mentioned him because so far THERE HAS BEEN NO FUCKING REASON TO!! Oh, on top of that, Sherry and Annette are in this as well. Annette will be mentioned two more times in this review, and Sherry will be mentioned three. That's right, these two characters who played major roles in the second game really didn't even need to be in this one.
So anyway, as I was saying, Birkin is getting his vials, which he created without the help of his wife apparently, when suddenly Wesker comes in. They have a shootout, Wesker guns down Birkin. Birkin gets a vial, Wesker gets the rest and starts to leave, Annette tries to kill Wesker but he blows her brains out. He starts to leave again and now Sherry tries to kill Wesker, Wesker points the gun at her, then he gets shot. You're led to believe she did it but actually it was Chris, or Jill I don't recall. Wesker lays there, bleeding out, and says that he wouldn't have pulled the trigger, then he dies. No, I'm not joking. The main villain of the first game, side villain in CVX, and main villain in RE5, as well as one of the goddamn faces of the fucking series was killed. I was like, "Oh, must be a fake out." My friend snickered, which I knew meant I was wrong. They actually killed him off. Which begs the biggest fucking question of the goddamn movie... WHY IN THE FUCK DID YOU MAKE HIM WESKER WHEN HE'S PRETTY MUCH BARRY THE ENTIRE FILM!!! Like SERIOUSLY!! I know the rebuttal to that could be that the film NEEDED to have Wesker, and while I would usually agree, I wouldn't necessarily say that's the case for this one, I'll get to that later, but even if the film did need a Wesker, fucking cut out the stupid Lisa Trevor bullshit and take the time you would've put into that into making Wesker. Hell, remove Irons too while you're at it. Don't fucking give me Barry Burton and slap Wesker over his name tag and expect me not to notice. Also, on top of this, Jill forgives Wesker before he dies. I already said earlier that I don't feel like Wesker did anything to seriously betray them and with his final words being that he wouldn't kill a child, I felt like they didn't even attempt to make Wesker a villain in this film.
So anyway, Chris, Jill, and Sherry leave. Birkin comes back. Chris and Birkin fight. The design looks weird, but whatever, by this point of the film I stopped really caring. Also, Leon and Claire are doing something at this point in the film but I'm not joking when I say I literally don't remember AT ALL what they did the rest of this film till the very end.
Birkin dies, oh but wait he doesn't. They escape. They get on the train from the end of RE2R, Leon and Claire are on there as well, Leon ask who the kid is, the same thing the audience has been thinking the entire time, and you think it's over. But in classic RE style, there's a final boss fight. Birkin's design here actually looks okay. The fight is lame, as were a lot of action scenes in this movie actually. Leon pops up and shoots him with an RPG which was so fucking stupid. I get it, it's a nod to the games, but the movie points out how stupid it is by Chris asking where Leon where he got it and him saying he found it. WHY IS IT ON THE TRAIN?!? They could've easily added a line into the movie about the train being mainly used to transport artillery or something, or even just crates with explosive warnings on them. But instead it's like he pulled it out of thin air.
The city is nuked, we hear a broadcast that there were no survivors, just as our heroes walk out of the train tunnel, and the title screen pops up. And by this point, you're so fucking happy the film is over.
So, in my opinion, a better solution to the Wesker problem in this film is make Hopper Barry Burton, change it to he's not getting the vials for money but for his family because they're being threatened. Let us not see the messages on the pager till after Barry dies. When he dies, zoom in and show us that the messages are being sent by Wesker. Setting him up for a villain in the second film.
Another big disappointment with this film, when it comes to story, is the lack of tyrants. Don't get me wrong, Birkin is cool and all, but I'd say tyrants are a staple of the first three games. To not have them in your movie covering the first three games is a big miss imo.
Which leads me into my next topic. I can understand combining RE2 and RE3 into one movie. But all three of the games?!? RE1 doesn't fit naturally into the story of 2 and 3 and therefore either needs to be a prelude or its own movie. And while I say they combined RE3 as well, they really didn't. They had the town getting nuked and that was it. But it's not like the sequel could cover RE3 with the city already being destroyed. Which really begs the question on if they were to make a sequel, where the hell would they go with it? Code Veronica is the only way I could see it making sense. That way we see Chris and Claire get a better bond, maybe have Leon in the film as well now as a government agent, and then lead us into RE4. But that's honestly your best bet. Not that I think this movie deserves, or will get, a sequel.
After watching this film, it really begs the question on why movie and tv shows can't just follow the story already laid out in front of them. I'm fine with some changes, it's understandable. But they botched 3 big villains in this movie, made big characters into nothing more than background characters, and completely ignored 1/3 of the story they were trying to tell. Not to mention, they absolutely left out any giant zombie creatures. We got to see a zombie dog, that was cool, but what about Yawn, Neptune, Black Tiger, any of the giant animal monsters from the games.
As far as a movie goes, not even considering the games, it's still not good. It's not good enough in any genre it tries to be in to actually be considered good. When it comes to horror, it has some moments, but really becomes less scary as the movie goes on. It has its action scenes but minus one in particular, they're all kind of boring and unoriginal. Even as a drama it doesn't work because the story being told isn't that interesting.
And what makes it worse is the acting. I know some of these actors can be great. I've seen them be great in other things. But in this they are not doing it. I don't know Leon or Jill's actors but they honestly bring the best to the movie, but even with that being said there's a good amount of scenes with both of them that just aren't acted well. And after so long you have to come to the conclusion it isn't the actors, it's either the script or the director. Is it just poorly written dialogue or are the actors not getting any direction in how to act during the scene? I don't know, but it's not great.
This movie feels like a B movie made by a fan of the games, but hasn't played the games in a very long time and also thinks they can tell a better story, despite having no idea how to write a good story.
Resident Evil shouldn't be a hard story to tell. Make it a show. Follow the games. Make files in the games into flashbacks in the show. Take the time to develop your characters. Master the horror elements and have SOME action. Make it atmospheric and have the sets, props, and costumes tell the story more than the characters. Make Spencer Mansion, RPD, and Raccoon City feel like a character, not just a set. I'm not saying I could write a Resident Evil show, I have no experience in the field, but I think any Resident Evil fan could've looked at the script for this movie and said, "Yea, this isn't good."

2023.06.02 12:04 brandonbrandonfruit Tips For VATS Only Runs?

Been thinking of doing a VATS only run. My only plan right now is maxing out Perception & Agility but that can only get me so far. Any tips or tricks? Please, no spoilers. I've played almost every game but not enough to say I know every plot line and ending.
TL;DR: Looking for a good VATS only build for the 3D Fallout games. No spoilers please.
